Develop clear policies and procedures for intake exams, health checks, and vaccinations. Establish protocols for isolation and quarantine of animals that are sick or potentially infectious.
Provide ongoing training to staff and volunteers on disease prevention and management. Make sure everyone is aware of the signs and symptoms of infectious diseases and knows how to respond to emergencies.
Develop relationships with local veterinary clinics and hospitals. Establish a referral network for animals that need more advanced medical care. Foster communication between veterinarians and shelter staff to ensure proper treatment and follow-up care.
Regularly monitor the health status of animals in the shelter or rescue. Conduct regular exams and track health data to identify trends or outbreaks. Establish a system for reporting and responding to disease outbreaks or other emergencies.
Before hiring, I have to make sure that all potential staff understands the gravity of their job it is not just a cleaning and playing with animals job. It is a lot of responsibility, lives are literally in their hands.
