Could be anything...Increase in senior leadership meetings. Quieter than usual supervisors. People redoing or packing up office items. Lots of closed doors in HR.

Granted, I worked on a team that was entirely remote, so there wouldn't have been physical office-related queues to be seen, but there was literally not a cloud on the horizon when I was told that my time at IBM was ending.
There were no performance issues for me specifically, and there were certainly others on the team that would have been more qualified if it were a performance related reduction.
There had been another RIF early in 2025, though no indication that our organization would be impacted, and it wasn't at that time. Senior leadership said that another 3,500 have to go, and here I sit on employment for the last 6 month.
What really churns my stomach is seeing all of the new hires posting about their new roles at IBM. On a personal level I am happy for the individual, and on the other side of the coin I've never felt more like an insignificant number on a speadsheet, even after making the company literally millions of dollars.
Sometimes there are no warnings. One day you will wake up with no access and a text that you are fired.
If you are even asking this question then you should prepare. Save your Pennie’s. Cut back on subscriptions and whatever else you can.
If your company does it the right way, you’d have no warning that layoffs are coming… that’s the point…
But a large signal is if they’re are reductions in sales staff or clear drawdown in revenue… being asked to take a pay cut… a reduction in responsibilities… or if a bunch of suits come into your office and are meeting with senior leadership…

It's called a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN), and each state has an employment agency that will post the notice.
Having seen the notice in my case would not have affected the outcome.
Pro
Hiring freeze, cuts to discretionary spending, people go quiet while talking in the hallway, big meetings get canceled, people stop talking to you or asking for status.
I was laid off yesterday. No warning signs, no prior conversations with me. All I was told when asked "why?" Was "there have been many meetings behind the scenes and the company is growing in a direction you are no longer headed". I was there almost 2 years.

If the coolant has over a certain number of employees, they have to post it. There is a web site you can look those up, but I don't remember it. Maybe someone else knows the website?
The website is called WARN
Major reorganizations
The word if mentioned “outsourcing”
Major projects ceasing (that are needed)
New board of Directors
Plant closings
Selling of buildings
Non Core parts of the business sold or shut down
25 years and I was gone along with my entire team, all areas of Finance, receiving, Procurement, security
