YES, I totally agree. Paid maternity leave should be a must for every company here in the US. It’s crazy how many places still don’t offer it or make it optional. Europe’s model where moms get guaranteed paid time off sets a great example, helping families and moms recover without financial stress. It’s overdue for the US to catch up on this basic support.
Only two countries in the world don't have mandatory paid leave: the US and (I think) Tuvalu. Which is insane. I think about that a lot.
I don’t think it should be mandatory, like as both a W2 and business owner it is not reasonable. But it is reasonable for you if you want it to go to a company that offers 3-6mo maternity or paternity leave when you want it. Any of the large banks or tech companies offer this, you just need to be at a career level type job and in an industry with the margin to afford it
In many large companies in the US we offer similar benefits like 3-6mo maternity or paternity leave, 1-2mo PTO, pensions, free IVF etc but they require you to be in a certain industry and at a certain level to get them and sometimes you get them at different times like when you need IVF go to Bank of America, when you’re an executive level go to US Bank for a pension etc
Does our country, meaning the United States, have any mandatory benefits anyone else would be jealous of? Beyond having to get overtime pay if you work over 40 hours and most industries. Although most developed countries don’t make you work 40 hours and pay living wages without doing that. I’m jealous of the compensation and perks given to European countries.
