You got bills to pay.
Chief
1) You should have equity. depending on the stage of your career and the stage of the company, it will determine how much.
2) You will quickly discover how bloated agencies are. Prepare to be as much of a doer as a thinker. If it’s small, You will need to own ideas, tactics, and execution.
Be suuuuuper clear with yourself about how many hats you’re willing to wear and/or learn to wear.
If you’re non-product at a startup, it’s highly likely you’ll be asked or expected to handle both your core role (on paper) and anything adjacent to it. An “AD” will prob be perceived as “they who handles ANY visual output,” be it web gfx, social media content, animation, branded assets, etc.
If you’re into that kind of versatility (and learning curve), you’ll do great.
Have been part of two. Startups are obsessed with what's measurable, and you should be prepared to pull the numbers on everything you do — but they're also cults of personality; your work alone is often not enough to keep you. You will probably have to work on a lot that is not in your job description, which I thought was fun. It seems like startups are even more layoff friendly than agencies are now, and they happen quickly and without warning.
It depends where you have worked prior to the startup. Creative is run very differently at startups (there is usually very little strat, expect no brief, and depend on the ask being social-driven).
Financially, realize that they expect you there working more than 40 hours a week. It’s just how startups are. You can be forward about this, respectfully, when you are negotiating comp. Based on your level, you can additionally ask for equity mixed in. Don’t be alarmed that it will likely be around 0.1-0.5% of the entire equity pool. You will get refreshers after vesting your initial batch.
All in all, it’s more kool-aid drinking than any agency you’ve ever worked at. But if you like the brand & the team, it can also be the most fun you’ve ever had at work. GLHF
There’s a really good chance that startup won’t exist in a couple years and your equity will be worthless.
