We make sure to have smoke alarms that are in good working order, a couple fire extinguishers around the house, and most importantly when we had kids talked to them about what to do and made a plan. Something else I was considering is a fire blanket.

Idk if it's anything special but we have interconnected smoke alarms so if one goes off, they all do. Also, a fire extinguisher in the kitchen is non-negotiable. I recently added a smart smoke detector that sends alerts to my phone in light of everything that's going on. I'm not in CA but in an area that also has wildfires and I don't want to take any chances, especially having a dog who is sometimes home without us

I just bought a WiFi smoke detector for the garage after 2 separate people i know had fires start outside their home and get so big that by the time the fires got inside and set off the smoke detectors it was too late.

We check the fire alarms at the suggested standard intervals and I stress to my family that when it comes to your life or material things, material things can be replaced but they can’t so I make sure to emphasize get out of the burning situation with you alive and everything else can be accounted for later.

We have smart smoke alarms and four fire extinguishers. We also bought fire escape ladders for our upstairs bedrooms. It gives me a lot of peace of mind at a very low cost.

Our garage is in the basement and faces backyard. We would accidentally leave the door open overnight from time to time. Can’t tell if it is open from inside without going down the basement to the garage to look. Tried some commercial products to monitor door status. They all sucked. So I installed a limit switch that the door activates when closed. 12v power supply. Green LED in the kitchen when the door is closed. Big multi-led flashing light like on roofs of construction trucks if the door is open. My neighbor can see that sucker in his house. Never left the door open again!

We have smoked and heat detector and we fire blankets also. We also have portable water fire extinguisher.
