The most junior person in the room should take copious notes
Jesus. A lot of uptight, micro managers in here. Disagree on sharing personal info with clients. The most meaningful and effective client relationships I have had were ones with deeper personal connections. So my rule is - treat clients like they are normal people and be a normal person as well. Being consulting robots is not to our advantage
It's okay for clients to share their personal life but you shouldn't share yours
Put a fkn agenda in your meeting requests.
I specifically ask for deadlines - I don't want 5 things on my plate that are due yesterday
Dress one ‘level above’ the client. That way you are acknowledging their culture while bringing a balanced amount of your own
Never bring up anything new near departure time.
Your manager doesn't actually want you to bill what you worked, they want you to bill proportionate to the % complete you are done so you don't blow the freaking budget. Similarly, your manager wants you to bill to as high a utilization as possible, without blowing the freaking budget. You are never to ask or say anything about these kind of shenanigans to the manager, but they will expect you to do them. If you have extra hours in one code that can boost your utilization...use them and make up a reason that the manager doesn't have to question.
"Unless specified everything is due yesterday" is a stupid rule. It makes consultants sound like they don't know how to manage a project or time (which is actually a critical skill).
Spend on expenses like it was your own money. But don’t skimp on team outings, but keep it respectable
Never get between a partner and his/her money.
There’s no such thing as draft.
Keep any team drama away from the client
No one really cares how your weekend was on a Monday morning call. Or ever, really
Everything is delivered in draft form
Don't be the drunkest person at an event
One I want to promote so it happens...the lead at the meeting SHOULD round-robin to ask for opinions of those invited in the first place. Don’t miss out on opportunities for opinions BC no one asked for them.
Ya, ppl should speak up, but some of us dominate the mtg w our own voices and others can’t get their voice in. We are not here to listen to the few
The util question kills me. I tell my team you are budgeted for 45 hours. If you are going to exceed that, you are a grown up and should be able to communicate that in order for us to make the best decision on how to proceed. Maybe we have some room in the budget, maybe we can shift work to other team members. Then I pull a Jan Levinson and ask them to clearly articulate what they did each hour. #theoffice
Never volunteer information.
PC1- watch the language. ‘Tards’ may mean one thing to you, but I understand it to be slang for ‘Retard’, which wouldn’t be appropriate to use as slang in this string.
