At the end of the day, if you’re not bringing in money (high billables or seven book), I don’t see how you’d elevate even if people like you. At the end of day this is a business, and if you’re not profitable, it’s difficult to truly make inroads at the firm.

Kidding, thank you for the suggestion.

Specialize in a niche area, bring in business, be responsive and diligent with follow-ups, do things before being asked, get involved in marketing and internal firm resource groups/initiatives, etc.

With that said, are the lower billable hours attributable to just not being great at capturing your time, or are you good at capturing your time but just not really willing to put in more than you already are? If the former, you can improve that. If the latter, most of the above suggestions also require time investments so they're probably non-starters.

I meet my billables and am going to hit my annual requirement but I would much rather rest and do other things I enjoy than work and bill more hours. I am involved within my firm and go to all the events but I will never be that person billing 200+ hours a month.

Make money. Bring in business or bill hours. That is the only way. If you cannot do that, you do not drive value. Sorry.

I currently work as an APM at a FAANG company but recently received an offer to join an MBB. I’m very excited about the role but didn’t realize I’d need to take a pay cut when I applied (~100k base + ~20k bonus + ~60k equity vs. 90k base + 10-20k bonus). Considering that I currently work 40-60 hours/week, I’ll be making significantly less per hour at the MBB. I’m very interested in the opportunity but also don’t want to make a poor financial decision early in my career. Thank you for your time!

From a vault ranking perspective, is it safe to assume V100 is all sweatshop big law? Reason I ask is because I want to lateral but not to a gunning big law firm — want to stay in big law but not at the ones at the top of the food chain like I am now. Want some sort of work life balance and wondering if the “lower ranked” big law firms offer this? Could just be my fantasy though…

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.

I am looking for the post made by the junior associate with the voicemail from the female partner on a Friday night telling her how stupid she is.
