What challenges have you faced as a woman in your field, and how have you navigated them?

I can fortunately say I haven’t faced much adversity in that regard. Sometimes I’ll have people make a snide comment about being a woman, and they're surprised I can do xyz. That is more the exception than the rule, and I’m grateful for that. I just ignore it and move on.

I’m glad your experience has mostly been positive. Those “surprise” comments can sting though—it’s frustrating that people still question ability based on gender. Ignoring it takes strength, but it’s also a reminder how far we still have to go.

Mostly trying to find the balance between making sure my voice is heard and not coming off to aggressive. In meetings, stronger male voices like to dominate so I hae to fight for my spot to speak. But if I get too loud, the looks, I get let me tell you.

This resonates a lot—finding the line between assertive and “too aggressive” can feel like walking a tightrope. I’ve noticed allies in the room (both men and women) can make a big difference by backing up or re-centering your voice when it’s overlooked.

Great question—it’s something that comes up often but doesn’t get talked about enough. For me, the biggest challenge has been subtle things—being interrupted in meetings or having ideas repeated by others and credited elsewhere. I’ve had to get more intentional about speaking up and supporting other women’s voices too.

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more. If the end goal would be that the friend might one day be a product manager and me an engineering manager taking instructions from the same friend, isn't consultant profile an easier path to growth. I had been practising DSA for years and the competition is only ever growing.
