I started out assisting UW by being an assistant. I would send letters, order requirements that the underwriters needed. This helped me learn more about the UW processes. Eventually, a FT UW position opened up and was offered the position. I assisted them in my down time from my other position in the company. That was a great way to learn the processes and the requirements for the company being underwritten.
What company?
Progressive will train you.
I’m in PL account management seeking an underwriter role as well. Is Progressive hiring?
I know Chubb, Travelers, and Allstate does. Idk where you are located but I looked at Chubb and Travelers and they both have open recs for Underwriters with little to no experience.
Chubb has a rec for an Underwriter Assoc. (Job ID 18602) and Underwriter Asst. (Job ID 18600), but the location on both show as Los Angeles, Walnut Creek, San Francisco
Travelers has one open for Experienced Insurance Underwriter Professional (Job ID R-43611) in Chicago, IL, Overland Park, KS; Saint Paul, MN; Saint Louis, MO; Independence, OH; Pittsburgh, PA. The name is kinda misleading cause it says it’s “EIUP is a customized training program with structured lessons and activities for the first 6 months followed by an on-the-job learning period. This program builds upon prior insurance industry experience”. In the must haves section it says you just have to have at lease 4 years of P&C work experience in any non-underwriting insurance field.
OP - where are you located? We're hiring!
I started in claims and have been in underwriting for about 15 years now. Best bet is to try and get into the program at your own company. Network with them now and see if there are any opportunities to job shadow, etc.
Look for CORE UW training req IDs postings. Most companies can mold you into the UW they need. Reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn or change to "open To Work" on LI so recruiters can reach out to you. Also, just a suggestion but study for CPCU designation and if you get that doors will open.
Best way is to network and find hiring managers to bypass HR and the application/resume filters. If you see a position, try to find out who the UW manager is for the region/team and see if they would be open to hiring someone with no UW experience. Taking at least one course for an UW designation like CPCU will also show some initiative. Go to industry events to network with other UWs or even brokers who may know of people or teams that are hiring. This is still a people business at the end of the day before AI takes a lot of our jobs 🤣 so building and leveraging relationships is key to get an exception to your lack of UW experience.
Northwestern Mutual is always looking for life and disability underwriters.
The big commercial carriers will have training programs. Otherwise it's probably not happening unless you know someone. There are a lot of UW assistants currently with carriers that are trying to fill vacant UW roles.
Apply for an entry level UW rotation. Oh sorry, you aren’t qualified because you have no UW experience. At least that’s how my company does it.
Acuity Insurance will! But you'll have to be local to their headquarters for the first 2 years.
What a GREAT carrier to work for 💯❤️
