I was just offered a CUNY role. The title is Higher Education Assistant. According to Glassdoor, the average annual pay for that role is $83,418. However, I was offered $62,500. I requested for the minimum annual salary to be 75k. Does anyone have experience navigating the CUNY system and their pay?

It may be a cop-out, they don't want to lose you but don't want to promote you. Or, it may be legitimate, they value what you do and know replacing you will be very difficult. Either way, you are stuck.
I'd start by talking to your manager to let them know you want to be promoted and/or broaden you experience (e.g. work on other projects). I can say from experience that being in the same role for too long can hurt your career and you need to make them understand your desire to grow professionally. If they won't give you opportunities it is a sign to start applying elsewhere.

I appreciate your input
Experience has taught me the most likely people to be promoted are the ones who perform just well enough to not be fired so they promote them to move them to a position that affects productivity less

Oh I know someone who worked as a supervisor and most were union. They fire supervisors every 2 years. Lol
It’s a cop out. Tell them if you have no chance for promotion then your compensation better reflect that. And 2-3% yearly increase isn’t it.
It’s tough when you have to work against your normal personality. I’m a very outgoing person and always offered help on stretch roles until I noticed how much extra I was doing for free. Had to rein it in and now rarely do it. Something you need to learn to do otherwise companies will always take advantage of you. Only loyalty I have now is to myself and family and if the job doesn’t help either of those then I’m looking.
Definitely a cage. If you want a promotion, then ask for someone you can train to do your job as well as you do while you start doing the job you want.

PM2 - I can see it from that perspective now. But wouldn’t I want to stay irreplaceable? Or is everyone irreplaceable no matter what, even if they’re valued? I think I’m probably just being petty not wanting to train. Hah
Either means you're a threat, they don't need you for the higher role, or they don't think you actually have the skill set to develop in the new role.

I’m have to self evaluate I suppose
You should leave, there will be no progression opportunities available to you there.

Thank you for the advice. I would have to agree. If I can find one..
You learn and become less valuable in your current role and look for a new employer

That’s probably my best move. Thanks
Start looking for a new organizarion foryour next step.

I think what’s stopping me is my tenure. I’ve been with the company over 15 years and would hate to start over with benefits like PTO. Maybe that’s something I need to get over.
I think a cage
Mentor
It’s disheartening
Yeah like I kind of see it both ways it could be a cage because they aren't trying to promote you or pay you more but it could also be a reason to ask for a raise in the position you're in now
Mentor
I have a hard time asking for things like that. I have to practice and do much more compiling my accomplishments and what matters.
Cage.

I wish it wasn’t. But probably is because it’s holding me back.
There is a saying I have heard more and more recently.
If you are irreplaceable, you are unpromotable.
The truth is, everyone is replaceable.
I agree to a cop out and a cage. This is not a compliment its a trap to get you to stay in the same position either by fear from the boss. The boss just may not know the value of your work. Either way for me this is a red flag and should be taken seriously.
Subject Expert
I appreciate your opinion. I see it more as a red flag now too.
It is code for they will no longer consider you for any higher position. I've been there, believed every word (I was younger then), and it was a monumental waste of my skills, not to mention the salay "increase" back then was only 0.25% per hour!!!!! Start looking. This is when you know that the people in charge do not have vision of the future in this company. Even when it is an amazing company, the strength is the people, but management needs to be able to also see that, and when do not, it is the undoing of a great company. When you wonder what is happening to a company (why their services are not to par), your answer is management and how they are running things. When companies recognize skilled personnel that directly impacts and makes changes for the better is how a company goes from good to great.

Thanks for that. I have been looking and it’s hard to let go of my tenure there. But I really do need more $$ and to grow!
This feels typical for what went on where I last was and where my partner currently is.
His is much more noticeable bc it was over a decade and a half of applying for positions and constantly not getting ahead. They did provide decent salary structure, and he receives great performance reviews. But he never moves out of his department/chair bc he knows how to do everything and does it well.
For me, I have heard my boss say to others, as well as myself, that “they” are keeping the employee until they retire. Zero room to move.
For perspective, I loved my job, but not the room in which I did it, for various reasons I had discussed up the chain. All I needed was a new space to work my work quietly. I didn’t want upward mobility at the time except bc it was the only way out of the space I was in.
My partner is in a “meh” position and would like to be doing something else, but bc they don’t have someone to trust to take his responsibilities, they won’t consider him for openings in other departments.
I flat out quit when I knew I wouldn’t get anything I requested that would help me stay happy and productive. But I had only put in a few years. I built myself new job skills after my initial warning that if my needs weren’t taken seriously I would leave, set myself a timeline with goals, and quit without a job, but decent prospects. I don’t recommend this unless you have a source of support.
Partner is still at his job with a quiet agreement that when he’s done, his direct supervisor won’t try to stop him from going. He’s not ready to go, but he will be at some point.
I don’t think it’s okay for places to keep you stagnant, with or without raises. If you want that, fine, but if you want movement, whether upward, or sideways, to get out of toxicity, you should be allowed opportunities you qualify for.

Thanks so much for sharing your story. There are a few others mentioning to train my replacement then move out or up from my current position. I’m starting to see the benefit of doing that. That’s only if the management supports it. It seems your management didn’t. I hope you did or are finding what you’re looking for. Hoping for the best for all of us!
A way to say we don't want you.
Subject Expert
In a way, yes! They probably want me to quit. Hmm..
Its time to ask for a salary increase.
Subject Expert
I really should. I need to strategize. I’m not sure they’ll let but I can always try!!
Thats what happened to me , worked there for 5 years in one department, then wanted to asalary /grade rise and did my own networking, homework , met other colleagues in department and they liked me and said they would like me to work there, then my own LL5 would not sign my internal vacancy form, said he can not release me, I am too valuable at the present time. I went to HR preeviously and asked when i can apply to work another department, they said 18 months. My LL5 said to me he would initialise my role, change my title role name, so my service would be zero years again, to counter react what HR said !! I was taken aback, I should not have worked so hard from the beginning, taken on 3, 4 peoples work !! Did not get grade rise, pay rise. Mind you a Senior Treasury Manager said that he wanted to take on my Senior Manager to the HR Committe , since he can not do this... I did not know what to do, had a big mortgage, family committments, decided to let it go, since I have no backup, etc. So being too valuable and if you want to move, get a pay rise can work againts you, like it has for me, Then you will lack enthiusiasm going forwards in your persent position and you do not bother when other situations arise. ... It becomes very complicated for some of us whi are naturally hard workers workimng for underhand sly senior LL5 JLR Managers !! JLR can not hire comptent honest senior LL5 managers, is it that the LL4 who hire them or is it HR or ?? Don't know, unlucky or ............
Subject Expert
Ok now that is the ultimate cage. Have you been able to leave yet? That’s super toxic! I don’t think my manager would stop me from leaving to a different department (or I don’t think internal moves would need their approval). Wow, I hope you do find something else soon, if you haven’t yet!
