I enjoy not having to know any actual law and mostly just shouting at Luxembourg lawyers for being slow.

The best part of being a debt lawyer is also the worst part: we are always busy because when times are good companies need debt to do acquisitions and when times are bad companies are refinancing their debt to allow for more flexibility. What I like about the practice is that I get to lead some deals like refis and serve as a specialist on others like acquisition financings.

There are a lot of varieties, so it’s intellectually challenging and interesting as you progress and broaden the scope of practice (compared to say debt capital markets).

It also serves a core function of our economy, so you’re basically in the thick of it all the time. Large cap, middle market, lower middle on down.

Exits in-house are mainly at banks and asset managers.

like

Exits depend on borrower or lender side. You can exit anywhere it’s about how you sell your experience

For me the main thing is im not psychologically able to do anything thats not urgent and in this job thats really not a problem

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
