I got the job. That is all.
Modern problems require modern solutions.

If you’re white like me it’s so important to realize that we were raised in a society where institutionalized racism is normalized, and we were born with privilege. You can’t choose the color of your skin, but you can choose to put ego aside and reflect on why this isn’t happening to me, and be vocal about being anti-racist.

Go in-house when you start reaching late 30s and beyond. Hours are better, pay is better but awards aren't a thing.
I just did this. Mid-30s
Holy compensation. I'll stay 20 years and retire at 55.
Stay the course! I’m 57 and no one wants to fire me.
Are you creative?
Preferably cardiac arrest at my desk lol the way things are going/feeling.
This is happening to many, many people in their 30s and 40s as a direct result of them getting COVID. A mild case can still kill you.

Teaching, in-house brand management, some other vague corporate marketing position. If I can prove I’m not a total hack I’d transition to directing and making films and non ad content.

I'm thinking elder care. Sitting around with old people, talking about the past, seems like a better way to spend my day than selling vacation rentals and beer.
A great question - I’ve been pondering this for a while now. Us creatives really do need an exit plan. As a creative in my 50s, I can attest that ageism is real. Not trying to lay blame on anyone, it just is what it is. The next phase is tough—unless you have a real passion for something outside of the ad world that can somehow make you money—it's a little scary... Hold me.
Ageism aside, our industry has been feeling the pinch for quite some time, but lately I've been hearing the death rattle. Make a plan. Utilize what you've learned and apply those skills to something else - ideally, something far more gratifying and rewarding. Things might turn around, but with AI nipping at all of our heels, it's highly unlikely.
Does creativity decline during middle age?
No. But it costs more.
