Word of mouth is the best way to get early adopters participating in the community before officially launching it. Make sure you have a strong social media presence and get as many people involved in the launch as possible.

Run a beta test. This will allow people to try out the features of the community and give feedback. Another way to get people involved is to create a teaser website or blog where people can sign up to be notified when the community launches.
