Live in DC proper :-) Shaw / U st, SW waterfront. Honestly, there are tons of great options.
Any other recommendations? Any reasons why I should consider one over the other?
I would take into consideration where your project is. Shaw is a pretty popular neighborhood near a lot of bars. You may also want to consider Arlington. The Accenture office is located in Ballston which is a nice area right off the metro with tons of high rises and a growing number of bars. Clarendon is another popular area in Arlington- expensive though.
OP, Arlington is very yuppy (north Arlington in particular, along the metro stations). A lot of office buildings, luxury apartments, bars, restaurants. Generally very safe, also expensive. Has a bar scene in Clarendon but somewhat caters to the 3-5 years out of college crowd.
DC varies depending on which neighborhood you go to. Generally has a more lively bar scene - plus bars stay open later. Not as safe as Arlington (if that’s something you’re worried about) but not really dangerous either. The most expensive neighborhoods are pricier than Arlington but you can easily find housing cheaper than Arlington as well due to over-construction.
Avoid everywhere but NW DC.
Why?
City market at O in Shaw neighborhood. I’ve lived there for about 4 months now and my only complaint is that I’m never there during the week. But overall friendly front desk staff, a great gym, and one of the best rooftops (plus a pool).
OP:
Where will your work location be?
What is your rental budget?
Open to housemates or prefer your own place?
Do you have a car or will rely on public transit+rideshare only?
DC has limitless options but it’s hard to give you proper advice without knowing these pieces of info.
Cool. Check out Shaw, U Street or Columbia Heights. Columbia Heights can still be a little rough around the edges but will be cheaper than U St or Shaw, and it’s getting better each day.
Live in DC if you want lively. Come to VA side if you are tired of hippies, homeless and thugs
Even the gentrified neighborhoods are not fully immune to these issues.
Shit goes down U St, Shaw, Gallery Place/Chinatown etc even now. I don’t consider H Street or NoMa to be “safe” as such either
Not to say that it is super dangerous, but you have to be mindful at all times.
NW is the safest and richest part of Dc. The liveliest part is U st/14th these days. Lots of fun. Shaw is close to that as well. If you want lively on that budget that’s hands down where to live.
Don’t live in Arlington - it’s quieter there. It’s totally liveable but doesn’t sound like what you’re looking for. DC proper is a great place to live - not sure what thugs people are talking about. I’ve lived in NW and now live in poorer SE and still don’t have issues w thugs.
Not sure where acn office is but you would be on green line from U St. Should be fairly easy to access. Navy yard area is good too and new and has some good nightlife and bars but not nearly as much as U st and 14th.
Can you talk more about SE? Is it still lively yet cheaper? Cutting budget is always good if the area still has plenty going on
