Mine is how insignificant a 3% raise really is. That's what I've gotten the past couple years after reviews, and it makes next to no difference in my paycheck. With the cost of everything else going up so much, I'm basically losing money each year. I genuinely like it here, but I'm realizing if I want to be able to hit my savings goals and maybe own a house some day, I'm going to have to keep changing jobs every couple of years.

This year taught me the value of keeping a close eye on my finances too. Assumptions can really lead to surprises!

Oh man, this hits close to home. My biggest financial lesson from 2025 was exactly the same: stop coasting and actually track the numbers like my life depends on it (because it kinda does)
Tracking and budgeting is the only way to actually get anywhere. I realized when I started tracking everything, just how little I as saving. Really hoping to change that in the new year.
Not too pleased with my finances heading into this new year. Eye-opening to say the least. I’m making some smaller goals and hoping to snowball those into larger ones. Too much coasting last year.
That anyone can become homeless. When CDC funds were cut early on, I didn’t think much of it because I worked for the local health department. However, within days I was laid off. I started a job immediately with the state health department and figured things would calm down a bit, but then those funds were cut four months later. I started my own small business to stay afloat, which has been OK, but it wasn’t three times the rent at any apartment in order for me to qualify. And so I ended up finishing the year out sleeping in my car before someone from my rodeo committee took me in.I had been homeless before throughout foster care when I was in college and grad school, but it was a very surprising turn of events that I became homeless because funds got cut to the entire public health industry.
Never trust what is promised when they hire you. The corps works us as a Skelton crew. I was worried about the hourly as I had just purchased a home. I was assured that there was always ample OT offered due to work load & staff ratio. Well, OT was cut since last Thanksgiving & the only increase we have gotten is workload. I barely made through 2025. I know where 2026 is headed since inflation continues to go up. The economy is in the toilet and job market is awful. I will end up losing my house eventually. The CEO MAKES BILLIONS & yet the employees can’t pay their rent. A major collapse is inevitable and coming. People are just barely hanging on. Lord help us all.
