I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

I got a remote L6 SWE offer at Google but the RSUs are too low for that level ($625k over 4 years), could not negotiate it higher. I’ve accepted the offer but trying to be hopeful that I could make it more equitable in the future if I perform well. Are stock refreshers based on the initial RSU grant or solely based on performance? Google

I think the rough heuristic based on what I’ve seen:
~6YOE: L4
~8-10 YOE: L5
~10-12 YOE: L6
~12+: L7
If your YOE are in relevant areas, at very strong companies maybe you can bump up a level but it’s not guaranteed and the company has a tendency to down level

if they were in industry throughout their career and zero consulting skills = For sure it would be a step or two down.
if they came from MBB and have been at Google ( dependent on role) for awhile = I think they would come at the comparable level or one level down.
Most people will not operate or think how like they used to. It’ll be an adjustment all over again. The pace at Google is very different…

I have the same question but for Deloitte. Would a Manager at Deloitte come into Google as an L5 ?
Set the right expectations for yourself so you know what you’re waking into. If career growth matters to you, and you’re not in a technical field, don’t bother.
