It might help to shift your mindset from a “copy” portfolio to just a “creative” portfolio. Think of it this way, ADs aren’t showing work without any copy on it, they’re showing the whole idea. Most of the folks I interviewed with just want to see my conceptual abilities and that can’t be determined by looking at a Word doc.
One thing to also consider is that the ACD level is where you start to lean in a lot more client wise. You can be great conceptually but if you cant sell and get the work produced then it really doesn’t matter.
Campaigns you oversaw. Big ideas you helped concept and create.
Most people getting jobs at ACD level are internally promoted or referred. Your book isn’t getting you that job easily, and loads of out of work CDs are applying for it too.
I’ve gotten hired for a bunch of ACD jobs. so many in fact that I really should be a CD at this point, so your point still stands
So, my book doesn’t say too much. I prefer to show a range of work over the years in a variety of media and then talk them through it. Be ready with the strategic insight, and why choices were made, and what excited you about the job. A lot of people have big descriptions in their book but mine has none. Lure them in with mystery and then your personality in a call/interview. May not be popular opinion but has always worked for me. And network constantly. Reach out over email or LinkedIn. People love feeling needed.
