Positive thoughts but being a hard ass it's time to open up shop for yourself.
When I was looking for work, I signed up for The Posse List. It's basically a listserv that sends out job blasts (mostly temp legal work). I'm still subscribed because you never know when you'll need a service like that. Recently, I've noticed a lot of remote opportunities for doc review projects.
I’ve been in Posse List for about 7 months now. I haven’t gotten anyone to take me yet, but hoping once I get the first more will follow. Same on JD advantage jobs here. Hard to break into for some reason. I’m trying to get feedback from rejections but nobody seems willing to tell me anything other than, “we just moved forward with a different candidate, that’s all I have for you.”
Hope you get something soon. Must be annoying when people on here spend all of their time complaining about their high paying jobs and actually having to work.
I don’t live anywhere near an Amazon location unfortunately. Can’t relocate. Don’t have the UBE score or the years for reciprocity. Don’t have the money to retake the bar, as far as law jobs are concerned. Relocating for nonlaw jobs would remove me from my safety net keeping me off the street.
Hang in there - I’m sorry this is happening to you. My husband has been looking for work for a year, so we feel your pain.
How many of you have actually used those gig work places like Vipkid and Rev, and have earned enough off my to pay your rent regularly? Or are you like me and got turned down (Vipkid) or just no work offered after weeks (Rev and many others, including nearly every lawyer app out there.)
Keep exploring all the avenues you mentioned, keep trying, don’t give up, you’re going through a very rough patch and it might last a bit longer so hold tight but continue trying your best and it will eventually yield results. Please reach out if there is anything that we can do
What about being a contract review attorney for a place like Hire Counsel, until you land somewhere?
Tried other services. No bites. Not sure I qualify on Hire Counsel if they’re the one requiring 5+ year experience. Still trying and waiting for contract gigs.
What about doc review like KL discovery, maybe post in local Facebook groups with lawyers in your area offering up per diem services or part time work in any area you can practice in, craigslist, what about applying for paralegal gigs? I hear you doesn't make it easier but I'm also unemployed now for 6 months some days are harder than others but finding some per diem work has helped. I also joined the local bar association to help people with unemployment stuff-- not paid but at least somewhat rewarding and keeps the brain working.
I am! Haven’t gotten any gigs from it yet but I reply to posting almost daily the past half year or so.
Apparently there’s a lot of competition I think due to COVID. I don’t have much experience let alone with doc review so I’m not a good candidate even for entry level but I keep on trying.
Have you tried your law school career center? What about consulting or public interest work?
Yes and yes. Career center says they’re out of options to assist me, consulting/public interest has not worked out. I volunteer for every legal aid clinic to get my name out there but so far it hasn’t had any return. They’re not hiring anything paid at the moment either.
Divorce Law?
Not hiring here, no mentors willing to teach, no upcoming free CLEs, and I don’t know how to do it.
Hey OP. No advice but wanted to send you positive thoughts and solidarity. Keep your head up.
Same, though we have to keep at it....
Why don’t you open your firm ? Sign up to get court assigned cases or the like.
OP I'm sorry. I wish I had advice for you that hasn't alredy been provided. I know the vast majority of your brainpower is being used to find employment, but I hope you are taking a little time for yourself to relax. I know it sounds trite, but I hope you have something you can do for yourself that is fun gets your mind off this clusterF for a couple hours a day. Good luck. 🌬️ (That's the wind emoji cuz I'm blowing good vibes your way. Wow, how corny!)
Government attorney positions like public defender offices are generally good in training if you have no criminal defense background and a lot of time in need of attorneys. Keep checking on postings online and create a Google alert
Ah, woke up to another rejection from a prospective employer that went with another candidate. The market is saturated here and I fear I may not be competitive enough. Who wants to hire someone who’s been out of law school for 4 years with the same experience as people who just graduated this year?
Don’t want to disclose, think barren midwestern states though away from most major metros.
Where are you located?
Where are you located? We are searching for a stellar attorney to grow with our busy firm! we are a family law firm in the Baltimore area. Pm me if interested.
I’m far outside the region unfortunately. Thank you for your reply though!
