It will sound silly, but my mother always wanted me to be in the military. As a teenager it never really caught my attention, but when I went to my first camp I knew there was something interesting about it. So I enlisted.
You know, sometimes you join because you have no other direction to go in life.
I wish I could say that it was a high and noble calling, that I wanted to support freedom for our country, something like that; but honestly, I just needed a place to live and something to strive for. I could either try to live on the streets or make it work. It was a good decision for me, I became a lot stronger in the process.
At one point in my life, I felt that I needed the discipline to keep moving forward, in the exercise I achieved this and more, and although it has not been easy I am proud.
In my case, I felt that my country needed me, and today I have been in my career for 20 years.
I didn't have much of a relationship with my folks so it was kind of a foregone conclusion, I just needed to get out of their home... and FAST. It turned out that having a purpose is really what I had been lacking and after basic training (which was difficult but certainly survivable) I really came into my own, so I stayed and made it a career. It's something I became proud of little by little, because it didn't always seem like I was doing something important but looking back, I can't imagine my life having turned out better in any other career. "This We'll Defend" are words to live by. Our nation is absolutely worth protecting and I may have stumbled into patriotism but the sense of purpose was lifechanging for me
Honestly, came for the Education Benefits. Quickly found far deeper meaning over the next few years.
I always wanted to serve. Just felt like something I had to do. My Father served in the Army so I grew up around Veterans. I was fascinated by everything Military and I wanted to be a part of something amazing. I enlisted a little later in life. First Army then switched to Air Force.
