What would you do if you found out the new-hire is making more than you? I’ve been at my company for 3 years and have received 1 raise since I’ve been there and they are still making more than me. I’ve put sweat, tears and lots of weekends into my work and I would love any advice 🥲

They negotiated better than you. The only way to get more $$, imho, is to leave and get a significant increase. In this market, it could be tricky

It’s true. Some people negotiate more money. Men typically negotiate more than women. You don’t get what you don’t ask for. But I will also tell you that comparing yourself and your salary to other people will always make you feel bad, now and well into the future.

like

Same level? Accept that’s the reality in this business. They didn’t negotiate better than you. They just came in to the agency new. If you leave same will happen for you. It’s a tale as old as time. The earlier you accept it the easier.

When I said Over perform I meant with results. Not by putting in more hours.

Unfortunately, this industry would rather hire new people at higher rates than give their current people proper salary adjustments and raises.

You will never make what you’re meant to be making if you stay in one place to long. It sucks. But, the only way to get proper raises in this industry is to jump.

Had the same thing happen to me. I brought it up to a CD I trusted and they said that’s just the way things go. So, I found a new job.

Respect their game. Work on your own.

You need to leave to make more money.

leave!

Usually the best way is to get an offer and see if you can counter. Make sure you negotiate with an offer you wouldn’t hate taking though since I’ve seen some cases where the agency doesn’t counter or can’t.

This is not unique to advertising. Economic climate changes and raises do not meet the gap created year over year. They are probably getting the market rate and your wages are stagnating because your employer is betting on you choosing the safe option (staying w/ an employer you know) vs jumping ship. They only have to pay you the minimum to do your role.

Leave and go somewhere else

This happens all the time in pretty much all industries. Focus on you and your value.

Livid. I left and no regrets.

Also you have to take into account what their previous achievements may be and how the company sees their ability to move the agency forward. It’s stinks though.

A lot of people do not do research on what other people realistically make and don’t negotiate enough. We also shouldn’t accept jobs that are too low.. that tells agencies it’s acceptable to do that and they can get anyone. There are two tiers of salaries right now and no one is taking advantage of it when negotiating. If you jumped around during the pandemic you made significantly more. Or at least you should have been if you did any research. Like not 10k difference but 20-30k difference. Do not forget that thing was something that every agency in every city was doing. When negotiating make it clear if you switched jobs during then and got in the higher salary tier so you’re expecting to make more than you are. If you didn’t, then bluff… If you didn’t move around then bluff and say you got a merit raise to retain talent when everyone was leaving. If the agency says the won’t go that high then don’t take the job.

How often do people actually go into the office? I’m about to get an offer as a CE and I live about 90 minutes from the office. Google will give me relocation but if I just need to go in 1-2 a week, I’d be open to stomaching the commute. Any info would be helpful!
