Just ask these 3 questions. What time do people normally clock out, or, what does EOD mean at your company? How often is there weekend work? When someone wants to go on vacation, what system is in place to cover for them so they can disconnect?
I recently asked a potential boss “so I’m not supposed to ask and you’re probably not supposed to be honest but it really matters to me: what is your WLb really like?”
She said “at my level? It sucks! But I chose that. And that’s typical for x-job. But people on your team are averaging 42-45 hours a week.” I don’t think I could have asked for a more direct/real answer.
1. Can you elaborate on the day-to-day responsibilities this job entails?
What are the challenges of working?
3. What are the characteristics of someone who would succeed in this role?
4. What do you like best about working here?
If there answer is “the clients” it may be a red flag that they don’t really do anything else
5. How would you describe the company culture?
I always ask these questions!
These were lifted from the article in The Cut. Nonetheless, great guide.
Tell me what a hard day might look like in this role?
I’m borrowing this! Great recommendation.
I’m at a point in my life where I directly ask what time they usually log off / leave the office. Gone are the days I’m willing and able to pull late nights so if I alarm anyone with that question, then it’s not a good fit.
I ask storytelling questions like “What are your favorite things about the culture here? What do you think could improve? What has the company done to support teams during the pandemic?” I also ask how leadership views/practices work-life balance and how they set that precedent for the team/organization.
I ask about the "culture" and if that does not cause them to hit on WLB then it's obv not a priority there
Work hard play hard
WORST red flag.
Ask them what hobbies they have
Ooooh nice!
- what are the expectations, if any, of
team members during their PTO or
personal time?
- what level of attention does this role
require outside of normal biz hours/
outside of the office?
- how frequently does the team need to
work or respond to emails after 8pm or
on weekends?
- does the team or client expect
communication outside of the standard
emails or video calls (e.g. texting for
immediate response)?
tend to get more honest/complete
answers with open ended questions than
with yes/no questions. if I ever felt
skeptical about an answer, I'd ask a follow
up question to dig deeper or say
"can you tell me more about that" or something
What types of people are successful here? What kinds of people have you seen struggle or be less successful? (Ask a more direct question after if this second question doesn’t get into work life balance, but I find it generally does)
When I interviewed for my current job, I asked, “what’s the pace like?”
That seemed to get the answer I wanted without sounding like I’m lazy and don’t want to work … lol
1. What’s the company pov on work/life flexibility? Can you share a couple examples of it and what it has meant for you?
2. How are the company values realized in daily decisions and teamwork?
3. Tell me about your time off policy, and what you do to support it?
I’d also recommend to focus on work/life harmony or integration. (Balance implies 50/50 split and there’s always time you need to lean into one or the other).
