Real talk from someone who went through it: if you suspect they are getting ready to quietly fire you, they probably are. This happened to me in another job (I wasn’t a paralegal at the time). It became so insulting and obvious to me I actually confronted my manager who sheepishly admitted they were looking to get rid of me and replace me. He felt so terrible when I called him out he paid me for the rest of the week and didn’t stop me from getting unemployment.
I am of the mindset of ‘make them make you leave and get every dime you can from them’. But that’s only if it’s a tolerable environment. Don’t stay in an environment where it’s mentally taxing on you.
Start looking for a job because it’s gonna take a while, keep doing your job and see what happens.
And just a little follow up to my story above: the business was being run into the ground and it wound up shutting its doors a year later because of poor management. Karma is glorious.
If it’s really that uncertain, I’d probably want to start exploring other options quietly, just to be prepared. If you can, try to document any signs or conversations that make you feel this way, just in case.
Trust those spidy senses!
Start looking, but make them fire/lay off you so you can collect unemployment while searching for another job.
