Everyone - designer or not - should read "The Design [Psychology] of Everyday Things" by Norman and/or "Don't Make Me Think" by Krug. It will help them understand that the goal of product development should be to create products align with how user's think and their goals, and not just be a list of requirements.
For example, a row of light switches may meet the requirement that you can turn off and on lights, but if you have to experimentally try each of them whenever you need turn on a specific light suggests it could be better designed.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was practically required reading at my University for SWE and EE majors...
