What's the craziest thing you have done to get by when unemployed?
I was struggling. Behind on things. No savings due to heath care for the woman I love.
28 years into a 30 year mortgage, had to let my car go; can't make payments + deal with her cancer treatments & eat. Got a junk car for making websites & the craziest thing I did was save our house
I know a slum lord who wanted my house, so contacted him. Said he could have it FREE, ONLY IF I can have a 10 year lease at $1 a month. He said OK!

How much is your house worth? What is the market rate for renting it? Curious to know who got the better deal.

like

We both made out great because the house, like anything else in the universe, is only worth whatever you can get for it and mine needs so much work is not even legally habitable.

Maybe 60K for the land, but the house is more of a liability than an asset at this point.

He has people who rehab houses with him so it'll work out great on both sides.

Interesting ask. Is there a legal document outlining the trade?

like

He is going to buy it for whatever the minimum is in my state (they used to allow people to sell cars for $1 but they changed it to $100 minimum to sell one so they get more in sales tax).

I imagine there is something similar in house sales, but I will get a written lease with the rent spelled out and he will fix it up while I just stay out of the way when they want to work.

I'm amazed I thought of it and even more amazed the they went for it!

I even have a verbal agreement that I can renew the lease if in a decade I am still struggling.

This guy runs a bible study group for whom I made some websites on the side years ago. Upgrading and maintaining them is part of the deal.

But this literally saved my life. If not my life then certainly the life of the woman I love - without whom my life is meaningless at this point.

Anyone from EY-Parthenon, what does a typical senior consultant look like resume/experience wise? If I have audit and FDD experience as a Senior for 3 years (currently in FDD), a CPA, no MBA, is that enough to get in to EY-P? Or is the MBA basically required? What would I be missing? Thanks!

Worst part about being unemployed is the pity face everyone makes when you tell them. If I hear one more "don't worry you'll find something soon" I'm going to scream. Trying to be helpful is one thing but pitying me helps no one and makes me uncomfortable.

Last week I had to explain to my child what “politics” (as in office politics) is. My child is going to a new high school and wants to play volleyball. There was a 3 day open “tryout” for incoming freshman for 2 teams. After the first day, she noticed that
1) there were obvious favorites (coaches are not even hiding that fact);
2) some can’t even play and got on the team,
3) some that can obviously play but did not get on the team;
4) decision were obviously made before the first day was over.

My wife and I just had our second child, and we have also been dealing with her cervical cancer diagnosis. It has been a stressful year, to say the least. I want to do something nice for her, but money is tight right now because of the cancer treatment costs, and her being on unpaid leave because of the cancer treatments. What is something low cost I can do that will be a nice “couples thing” so we can de-stress, but also make her feel special?
