Once you hit/near $1k mark, you are essentially in the ballpark to get something custom made for you that will fit much better. Not pretending to be holier than thou, but in my experience once you go custom it's tough to go back. Obviously lots of great designers for OTR that you can heavily tailor though.
GS nailed it. No reason to pay over 1k for a non custom suit
Not unless your a model 😋
I wouldn't pay more than $600, including any after-rack tailoring. I've got a suit guy who makes damn good suits for ~$1k. Perfect fit, last longer, exact style I want, better material. If I can get a good suit for $775 off the rack, why not spend a little more for perfect? I've still got two of the cheaper suits, and I'll wear them into the ground... but I'll probably never buy off the rack again.
If you have the body type for off the rack, go for it - you can get way nicer materials than you would for the equivalent priced custom suit. Know what can be tailored easily (sleeve length, trouser length, suit length) and what isn't worth it (shoulders). That being said, I top out at like $600 - Suitsupply fits me well and has half canvased suits which is great. Plus, contrary to popular belief, cheaper suits last longer because the wool isn't as fine (ex/ S110 or S120 versus a S150 wool). Learned this the hard way.
^my point exactly🙃
