What’s your bonus structure like on paper vs in reality? I’m evaluating an offer with 20% discretionary bonus based partially on performance.

If you have a similar bonus structure, I would love to hear whether you receive your target bonus yearly. Also interested in knowing whether you’ve dealt with a bait-and-switch, where the target bonus is there to lure you but the company makes you jump through hoops to get it (e.g., requires “exceeds expectations” on annual review)

Typically on a 1-5 scale where 5 is the best for performance people who get 3 (meet the standard) are generally awarded 95-100% of target bonus.
4s-generally get 10-30% above the target
5s-generally get 30-50% above
1s and 2s may get 0-80% of target. Very discretionary for low performers.
And then theres a company multiplier. The better the company does financially the more youll get on top of that. It’s less discretionary because it’s a factor that is consistent across all employees.
But I’ve never experienced a true bait/switch where they say the target is 25% and consistently give much less when you’re performing as expected.

In tech unfortunately the bait and switch has been very common in tech for the last 3-5 years

My bonus is x% of base salary as a target. Bonus funding is done from corp coffers based on company wide financial performance. Manager has discretion to adjust up and down based on performance. My manager is exceptionally reasonable and doesn't require a "exceeds expectations" or anything like that. But like I said managers do have discretion. I'd say from the 4 bonuses I've gotten so far, they were all pretty much inline with what expectations were from how the company as a whole performed

like

My bonus is a % of salary as a target and has been paid out 100% each year. There hasn’t been a reason for it not to be. It’s more tied to company performance imo. If the company isn’t doing well I imagine then it would potentially be reduced

like

When I was a contracts manager in-house at a now-PE-backed SAAS company my bonus never paid out at the full targer because of company performance. We had a multiplier system where your performance could increase the payout but that was even suspended some years. Over my 5 years my bonus paid out anywhere from 55% to 85% of target.

likehelpful

First bonus exceeded the percentage stated in the offer letter. Ymmv.

Negative.

like

Bonus is 10% of base, split between my performance and company performance. Wish it was higher; especially annoying when I get full attainment on my part but the company misses on its.

My stated bonuses percentage is 25 or 30% and I’ve been paid out above/well above target every year due to personal performance and company performance.

20% target bonus based evenly on company and individual performance. The company portion is tied to profits and if the company’s profits was above or below by a certain percentage your bonus will be adjusted accordingly for that 50% company portion.

My company cut staff to 4 days/wk to save funds. I was getting requests from coworkers for docs needed urgently on our day off (fridays). I would oblige them. But then, I learned that those same coworkers had been put back to 5 days because they were deemed “essential“. I felt foolish and decided to stop working on fridays. One EVP (not the GC) in particular has been aggressively texting/calling me on fridays. How Do I tactfully respond? My out-of-office email is not enough of a hint...

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. I don’t want to be miserable again. I know Amazon is poorly reputed for lawyer WLB… what about other places?

Hello, hoping for some input on how to time a job change. At a startup - we are doing well now but unless we have complete turnover in management I don’t think we have a bright future post-COVID. I could coast here 1-2 years before having to look. I’ve been here for a little under a year. This is my second in house job after 10 years at the same firm. The market is hot now, probably won’t be in 1-2 years and I am getting interest for good roles. OTOH I don’t want to look like a job hopper.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

What would be a typical salary for a junior in house counsel role (3 yoe) at a publicly traded company in a secondary market (think Austin, Tampa, Charlotte)? I’m having a really hard time finding what a reasonable range would be. Most positions I’m applying to require desired salary in the application, and the truth is I’d accept anything north of 125k but don’t want to undersell myself and take a bigger cut than necessary coming from biglaw.
