It seems like legal tech vendors are always swarming in-house counsel. What are your biggest legal tech pet peeves? I personally hate when they call me to follow up. Email is annoying but preferred, don’t call me 🤦‍♀️

These people are clowns. If I ignore you once and you repeatedly badger me for a useless product - you can count on me setting up a fake meeting with you and then no-showing/blocking you

Is there even a product they sell that is beneficial? I sometimes take their demos and it’s usually like they’re speaking Chinese to me. Even visually I am often lost. Then they’ll tell me some five figure starting price tag and I’ll be even more confused.

I never reply to them, but a chuckled when I read that the random legal tech salesperson was "personally assigned to me to help develop my company's legal tech."

If they're annoying, I will write back and say our tech budget is fully allocated, we are not buying. It works.

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

How far do you require depts be with negotiating commercial contract terms before your legal review? I’m talking routine low value and risk contracts (e.g., vendor services), where Legal terms won’t kill the deal. My clients blindly forward contracts. I say “are you sure this term is ok?” And often get “no.” They’re surprised because they never read them. Checking the temp to see what others experience, what might be normal. I feel contract training in my clients’ future...

I'm an IP Attorney for a global Fortune 500 company. I only focus on IP mainly patent prosecution, Right to Market searches, Patentability searches, Landscape Searches, advising the business on IP related agreements.

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. Is it worth trying to get a counter to stay if I get the bigger offer?
