Sounds like you already have your answer
As you consider failures ask yourself why did your firm make the person a partner to begin with? Someone with significant gaps who is not coachable should surely have been flagged.
Are you seriously trying to do all these things to someone at that level?
Unless you throw out the "partner" title easily in your offer letters, you're not coming across as someone who knows what the "partner" title means...
If you can't craft a role that plays to their strengths while minimizing the negative impacts, they're not a good fit for your org / team.
Sorry you're dealing with this. These conversations are tough. Good luck.

Partner is just a title. If it were a MD or Senior Manager you would have fired them already.
I think it depends on tenure / business plan. New promotes / hires should have some time if they are executing as should be expected or can design and meet milestones. If they just won’t cut it, there are a lot of negatives if they linger.
I’ve never heard someone say the made the decision to separate too soon.
