I liked when the movies had a little bit of lo-fi quality to it... from grand hotel onwards it became massive productions.

I think I've seen them all except for The French Dispatch. Not sure about peak, but my favorite was The Royal Tenenbaums, which I went to see twice in the theater when it came out (probably only done that 2 or 3 times), followed by Rushmore.
I’ve always found his directorial style more alienating than immersive — so self-consciously stylized that it constantly reminds you you’re watching a film. It breaks the spell, undermining the very purpose of cinema: to disappear into another world, not be nudged in the ribs by the filmmaker every five minutes. “Hey look at me, in creative! My names Wes!”
