I had an employer accept my resignation on the spot. I've never asked to work more days though. Not sure why you would negotiate more working time with a former employer.
I would NOT quit on the spot. That's a phenomenal way to bring bridges. This industry is too small and reputations are too precious.
I think it can really depend on why you are leaving and the people you are leaving.
I once gave two weeks which was initially accepted, but then I was asked to leave on the second day of those two weeks. I very happily left.
At the job that I left that one for, I gave like 4 months’ notice because I had been there 7 years and was leaving because I was moving across the country, not because I had any issues with the firm. I respected and loved my bosses, so it felt like the right thing to do. They were sad I was leaving, but happy to have the time which was used to transition matters and find my replacement.
My firm asked me to stay on for 6 months after I gave my notice. When I declined, they asked me to leave.
Giving more than the standard does make sense given the holidays, but they may still ask you to make an early exit.
6 years.
Depends on how much you like the environment you’re leaving. Taking into consideration your fellow associates. I have left a couple jobs and while I didn’t necessarily care for the owners/management, I knew that leaving quickly would cause additional stress for my work friends. Do what you can with the last few days you have to lessen the work load for other associates.
If you are going to a direct competitor we likely show you the door as quickly as possible to transition work (but we’ll pay you the full two weeks) If you are going to a client or prospect, take as much time as you want!
I’ve had two colleagues leave for a huge client. They both worked a month or even two, because they wanted to.
I gave about a month notice when I lateraled, but we were about to start prepping a case for trial and I wanted to make sure everyone had plenty of time to transition.
I think it depends a lot on your personal situation: whether you want the paycheck from working additional time, your agreed start date with the new employer, why you are leaving the existing firm. If you are leaving on amicable terms my experience is the existing employer will ask you to stay on longer than 2 weeks if possible so they can recruit the backfill. I have agreed to a month in the past because I wanted the additional weeks payroll, but in that case I delayed telling the clients I was leaving to avoid making that time period awkward.
I gave three weeks notice when I laterals to be nice because things were so busy, but I’ll never do that again. They piled me with a ton of work because they would rather I burn out then somebody who is staying. Going forward I will be giving one to two weeks notice if I ever leave
I gave 4+ weeks’ notice. I’m getting my bonus and my colleagues are happy I’m helping transition matters appropriately during a super busy year-end.
Thanks all. Going in house to a tech company! And definitely don’t want to stay more than the 20 days I’m planning to give notice
