When is the right moment to bring up compensation? In the first call, they normally will give you a range. But when is the real compensation negotiation, when get an offer? Or bring it a bit early? In your experience, when should candidates start the real salary conversation without hurting their chances?

I've always assumed it's premature to do this at any point before the offer has been made. Getting the range is, of course, another story. That's reasonable to want to ascertain during the screening call or initial interview IMO.

For in house hiring it’s usually discussed on the first screener call. Every in house role I’ve interviewed with we aligned on that first call with HR or the hiring manager before even moving forward. Firms were a bit less transparent. I’ve gone through the process with a firm only to be told a ridiculous offer that was lower comp than I was making. Complete waste of everyone’s time.

Range early on, specifics at the offer stage. If the range is too wide, I would like to have it narrowed down before continuing with the process.

Additional Posts in Ask A Recruiter - Law

How do find a recruiter in the legal field? Have been looking for a job for a year now and trying to transition into another practice area. Applied to more than 20 jobs and still no offers. I feel like I might need some help.
Also, I have no idea how these arrangements work. Do you pay the recruiter to look for the jobs or do you pay them when you get the job? Or does the employer pay them?

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?
