2nd when young < ~35, 1st when older with many more responsibilities.
Throwing my early 20s away in an environment where I could be content, comfortable, but stagnant was so damaging and seriously stunted my growth. I had to seek out resources on my own time to learn. I have since switched and feel like I am finally on the right path now in my late 20s, but still can’t shake the feeling that I am playing catch up now.
As the saying goes - “a ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”
Which firm or role were u at when you in your 20s
Chief
Been at both.
I was at #1. Work < 30 hrs/wk. everyone thinks you are the smartest and everyone comes to you for advice. People were just shocked and some even cry when you tell them you are leaving. Oh… they pay a ton too.
Then I choose #2 with a huge pay cut coz life was boring. Think it’s meaningless to do this repetitive thing. I want to challenge myself. Now, I’m working day and night to catch up with everyone. Your confidence is down in the drain. Wife and kids barely see you anymore. You are stressed and afraid you aren’t good enough.
So, it’s obviously #1 if you love yourself.
Fuck… Just quit from #1 and starting #2 in a couple of months and really worried on the impact it will have on my family

#1 doesn't always lead to success fyi
Sometimes when you're smarter than everyone else, they start to not like you and that has consequences.
You can sit back and chill if other peoples choices dont affect yours.
#1, and chill
If everyone is a total moron and do everything the wrong way, in my experience created more work for me because I had to pick up their slack . It was more stress and frustrating to deal with….
I mean consulting as an industry is #2

I’ve done both. #1 was the most unhappy point in my life.
I think it all depends on you tbh and ur personality.
I can never do the first one even tho I tried several times. The reason behind it is that I just cannot bare anyone who is irresponsible, doesn't respect the time and is not trying to communicate, solve problems or work hard. I just cannot work with someone like that it's suffocating and I always end up doing most of the work which can be exhausting. Maybe one day I will be able to make this work if I don't get personal and emotional and use my leadership skills to get them to work.
I think I would prefer the second one. The reason why I feel this way is that I am a sucker for learning and get happy when being put in a situation where people know better than me. I want to quickly get better than them by learning from them asking questions and learning from other sources and quickly fit in the place and feel a sense of belonging. I believe learning and asking questions is the right way to go here. And sometimes one has to accept that you are not better and don't know much so you have to accept what you are, but learn as quickly as possible to be better or be a part of them.
This is what I think and how personally I would approach these two situations. But at the end of the day, it is all up to you and how you feel. I think hate both situations but you have to get out of your comfort zone and work with one and fix it. Because these are the only two types of workplaces dumb and smart.
Think about why projects fail, then decide.
Can you coast as #1 without accepting you’ll always deliver sub-standard work? I suspect as long as you can make peace with it then alls we’ll. otherwise, sounds like the consulting nightmare of working with a brand new team and having to pick up all the slack

B. It's hard, but in the end you'll improve and learn and thrive if you put the time and effort. Then bounce to the next even more lucrative opportunity.
Choosing A will sound fun and boost your ego, but the day to day will become a drag. Not to mention you'll waste the years not growing and learning from those around you, and might even pick up bad habits.
Successful people are contagious. Their habits, thoughts, mannerisms, everything. Take A and soak that in, you'll never know where it might lead you.

This has to be a joke… #1 by a mile
I've done #2, currently doing #1 since I started consulting. Currently trying to go do #2 again, I miss the days of being the dumbest person in the room. Absolutely hate being the smartest with a burning passion. I also hate it when people insinuate that point, it's like then why the f#^$ am I here? I've heard it from other people that "hey you're smarter than the rest of the team" and it pisses me off.
