Dear God I would pay money to opt for conference calls and never have to worry about my facial expressions on a zoom ever again
You can change the zoom setting so you can’t see your own face (not that I’ve been able to make myself do this but it is an option)
I’ve tried this, but I recently had clients get on the call and be like “Oh, this isn’t a zoom or teams? I like see each other so we can get to know each other better!” Of course I responded “No problem! Just give me 10 minutes to get back to my computer” as I frantically tried to find a clean shirt, shave, brush my hair, and brush my teeth (still don’t know why I do this for a zoom). In any event, I’m on the conference call team. I spent 10 years talking to you without seeing you and now there is a pandemic and I have to look at you everyday? No thanks.
Your post confirms that Zoom adds an entire layer of stress to an already stressful job.
Rising Star
I send zoom/teams invites camera off and love screen share. Being able to share a draft live and make revisions has helped finalize so many agreements and avoid needing subsequent meetings
Rising Star
Dial ins don’t allow screen sharing. And the integration with the rest of our systems is such that it’s easier to call internal people by way of Teams than to call them on their office lines (which they’re h likely to answer anyway).
SA I mean there’s a lot of things we were able to do without before. The first firm I worked at had dial up internet - I didn’t “need” anything faster. Why wouldn’t we take advantage of features like screen sharing, closed captioning, clicking on a link to join, just because we didn’t use to have it?
I have told several sets of folks that I’m available for a call but not a zoom.
All of those same things can be done camera off.
Ducking hate old style dial ins. Half the time they don’t know how to send the one click mobile friendly option properly and I’m 2 minutes late from punching in a million numbers manually, you can’t easily tell who is on the call, who is speaking etc. I only send zoom dial ins but I set the default to video off so only if someone actively turns on video does it go on. Some clients like video on (mostly NY I feel like) which honestly I also like, I feel like it’s more humanizing for negotiations etc, but I start video off and only turn on if like the partner/client are video on and sometimes not even then. Depends on if I’m running the call/actively participating or just listening.
Y’all have your cameras on for zoom meetings? Is it bad that i don’t? Lol
OP - turn off your camera then! Lol why would you keep it in if no one else has it on
I never send Zooms. Never have sent zooms.
I prefer video-off zoom where you can see participants’ names (or phone numbers). I definitely do not miss the roll call.
Also seems to work more consistently than our old conference line service.
I agree, seeing peoples names is a nice aspect of zooming with a larger group.
I send conference call dial-ins ALL. THE. TIME. No shame in my game.
Yesssss keep fighting the good fight. You have an ally here!
Conference calls are still happening
I’ve had conference calls with various firms (co-counsel) and corporate clients
Spread this gospel, PLEASE
Started a new job and there is an informal rule at the company that if the most senior person on the call joins with video on, everyone goes video on. This was shocking to me for a while coming from a company that had a culture of video off during calls.
I do miss multitasking during calls and you’re right that’s no longer as easy as it was before.
Zooms are easier to send and dial into, and can share screens, and can see who is on/talking. FFS just say “cameras not required” or something
New firm made fun of me for sending a Teams invite instead of a dial-in. I love it here.
I am aware I am a rare case but I have never been on cam this whole time, during this entire pandemic. Not for my Masters class in Zoom university either. We use Teams and everyone has their cam, I don't and simply refuse to. I find everyone still listens to me, and listens better. They are more engaged and ask me more engaged questions after I speak. I have also presented three times to my entire firm without my camera on. Sure, I copped flack for a while from a couple of seniors but everyone is used to it now. Clients do not care and I find they really listen, and they come back to me and refer even more work. Zoom and being on camera is so overrated.
Conference calls all day! I just tell people that with my computer setup I can't be on zoom unless I rearrange my whole everything, which I can't do because I won't be able to use my large screen. (laptop closed and connected to monitor--mic doesn't work that way)
I don't understand the need for zoom instead of a call if you don't need to screen share, and even then I use my phone and solely use screenshare
Rising Star
Already done.
I do it all the time if I know we don’t need to look at the doc or it’s for the same day. The problem is zooms are much easier to send. But I don’t turn my camera on.
So I totally get the zooms being easier to send. The dial in really doesn’t populate the calendar invite in an efficient, easy to use way and for zoom you don’t always need a code like for dial ins. Ease of use is important.
My firm took away all conference call capabilities outside of zoom. I wish it’d just become the norm to stay off camera
Maybe with respect to getting used to new way of calendar invites, etc., but otherwise I don’t really think so
