Great read and a reminder. I grew up in the 'hood', went to a STEM high school, and the elitism was strong. When I was in college, a math professor told me that in 2 weeks I will drop the pre-calculus course, because I didn't take the prerequisites.
Not only did I prove him wrong, but after my first test, he sent students my way who needed a tutor. I was hired by the community college to work in their student tutoring program, not only in math, but in other courses as well.
I am a math teacher now. I use videos, show students numerous ways to get the answer, draw pictures, sing songs, whatever it takes for them to have every opportunity to engage and LEARN how to MATH. Are there students who flat out refuse to try? Yes. They typically come from families who have said time and time again that everyone in the family is lousy at math, and it is impossible for them to learn.

👊🏼👍🏼❤️thanks for sharing your story. Was to go. Kudos for choosing to prove them wrong. You have to do that with your actions.
Right on the math mentality. I did not like math until I was learning to teach math.
Keep being an inspiration!
