Because the clients expect the same level of competence regardless of where you live. Living in a HCOL city isn’t relevant to the work the client is asking, so the pay matches the job you’re expected to do. We’re all cogs in a machine

Because they still need high caliber talent in the M/LCOL areas.
This. When I started in consulting as an analyst, I could make $75K in a LCOL city or $75K in a HCOL city. I chose the LCOL city (which was my hometown), saved a lot of money, and could afford to enjoy the HCOL city via alt travel. I — and the rest of the office — would not have chosen the LCOL city if it required a pay cut.

All the b4 are adjusted for COL. That aside, if you’re doing the same work then why is it on the company to pay more because you want to live in NYC?
Lol. Your principal was same work same pay. Now you’re caveating it with country. So really you don’t believe in same work same pay. I’m caveating with cost of living, which is standard for many companies.
Dumb comment 😅 since I don’t understand it fully.
What if someone was forced to live in a HCOL city they didn’t choose to? Idk let’s say a sick family member, access to medical care, or whatever the reason is. Doesn’t that person effectively make less than someone in a LCOL city based on expenses and the ability to save cash? This is if salaries are standardized.
Isn’t the price of the dollar different between localities? So if salaries are adjusted for COL, then technically, aren’t the HCOL and the LCOL on the same salaries even if the physical count of cash is different?
My bad if this is a dumb comment lol
That’s interesting. Thanks.
Companies have no problem attracting employees (particularly young consultants right out of school) to HCOL areas, so why should they increase pay?
Anecdotally, we pay the same across all of our offices but the NY office had to stop taking transfers and Houston is hurting for people even though COL and taxes mean that NY is essentially taking a significant pay cut relative to Houston

When I was at kpmg a few years ago I moved from LCOL to HCOL and I received a COL increase. It was a voluntary move. Maybe they got rid of this after covid?
We are revenue producing billable humans. The firm makes the same amount of revenue for my billable hour whether I live in New York or Utah. I deserve to be compensated in line with the value I bring billing per hour even if I live in Utah.
Consulting at accenture adjusts for COL but Strategy does not — at least for our analyst programs
I am in consulting and my salary is adjusted about 20% for NYC
Can you imagine getting assigned an engagement in bum f Idaho and your salary dropping 40%?
