In my county, we have Multicultural Literature. :)
Love this and I agree with the choice.
Because British literature is our cultural history, the country was founded as British & it is the same language, English. Plus lots of Shakespeare can be taught.
World lit. is not supposed to include any Brit lit. as that was already covered in a previous class & it is meant to be truly the rest of the world lit.
African American lit. is not World lit, it should be covered in American lit. & in previous grades. However African lit. should be a very strong part of World lit.
Mythology is covered in earlier grades & in 9th when The Odyssey is taught.
It used to be 11th = American lit, 12th = Brit lit, but there was a push more than 25 years ago to make 10th American, 11th Brit, & 12th World. And that worked, however then AP testing became very popular, no longer just for the very cream of the crop & AP classes were created & then modified to meet the testing.
Does that help? I have 30+ years of experience teaching high school English in 2 states.
@az, what you're looking for is taught in Economics classes. There does not need to be an added burden on English teachers for that subject.
Not all schools have a World Lit class. British Literature is the foundation of of our language and where the origins of the English we speak today. By studying it, students can learn how language changes and evolves over time as well as the content. So, I guess that is why many schools go with British Literature instead.
I've only seen English 12 be British Lit as a choice option. Generally speaking, the default English 12 courses tend to be a nonfiction / composition focused course.
It may be a regional/state difference. 11 is still American Lit here and 10 World. Many schools only offer a choice of AP or a generic English 12 focused on writing, but I've seen a couple where British Lit is offered as an alternative (probably to pacify specific staff members who were outraged when the general curriculum moved away from that being English 12).
In my district the default course is English 12. Students have the option of taking AP Lit instead of English 12, and some schools offer electives that focus on 1 area of literature (African American Lit, etc), but there is no focus on any 1 type of literature in core content English classes in any grade.
Brit Lit can’t be an AP course, there is no AP Brit Lit test...
I like the idea of teaching other genres of literature.
*agree. We have EVERY reason to.
We usually give a choice between Brit Lit and Multicultural Lit. Both have 12th grade standards. You gotta find your own texts for multicultural though—most text book companies do 9th lit (survey), 10th lit (world lit), American lit and Brit lit. I have found some good multicultural lit texts though.
We examine reading text through various critical lenses. I stress to students that in college they frequently have to do this for themselves, professors might just assign reading and not a lot of guidance as to "how" to read any particular text.
Are you explaining WHY we continue to teach Brit Lit?
