I’ll chip in from my perspective on the other side-the money goes towards different things (overhead like electricity/internet/heating/water, insurance, supplies, staffing and the few benefits offered). It might feeelll like we’re making bank but teachers aren’t.
The system is broken like you’re sensing-you can’t afford to pay more (it’s like another mortgage/rent) and we staff can’t afford to earn less (barely getting by, not even thinking about those with dependents 😬). Everyone looses, it sucks :(
Agreed-it Should be a public good that taxes at least partially cover
Well, quality services cost money. For far too long, childcare workers have been woefully underpaid -- and they are caring for our children (far more valuable than our cats, houses, etc.).
That being said part-time work or stay-at-home parenting may be a reasonable choice -- especially for young children.
After all, it would stink to have to work and use most (or all) of take-home wages to pay someone else to care for one or more children, communicating expenses, clothing for work, etc.
I'm my case, the decision was made for me. My child was in and out of the hospital a great deal as an infant and a toddler. I geared my solo practice down in order to make doctors' and therapy appointments, stay with my child in the hospital, etc. (circa 2001-2006).
It certainly changed my practice, but -- knowing what I know now -- I have no regrets.
How is your (grown) child now who was once hospitalized?
I opened up my own childcare business through the state I became licensed and certified. This way I was home with my kids and making money. Because I knew what ut was like to have to pay childcare and work I didn't charge as much as other childcare businesses. I was always full and the money was food even at my discounted rate. You can write off a portion of your home, your vehicle if you transport to and from schools, the food you buy to feed the kids. It's a Good business if you love kids. Downside....the parents.
How old is your kid maybe they should join the Boys and Girls club after school program
Not to scare you but to inform you-there are waitlist fit many places because of the short supply 😔 Depending upon availability, you can try chains (Bright Horizons, Goddard, Kindercare, etc) or local one off places like a home care. You can try for a nanny or maybe an au-pair. Check out Care.com and SitterCity.com for people who can provide care

I’d try to get something remote and prioritize my kid if I had a reliable partner
This is why my wife and I decided for her not to work. Only 1 income isn’t fun at times; but cannot put a price on watching and raising your kids
