Alright, alright, alright..
If you have to live in Texas, it has considerably fewer intolerant radicals who preach freedom yet often pass laws that significantly restrict it.
I’ll give you this one. If I were forced to live in Texas, sure. But this hype seems to come mainly from people in other states wanting to move to Austin.
Chief
Cons:
-infrastructure keeps breaking down
-public transit is an aspiration at best
-unholy mix of aggressive Texas drivers and California drivers, resulting in highway duels between paper plate Altimas, pickups, SUVs, and Priuses
-seasonal boil water advisories
-weekend larpers at the State Capitol
-lack of outdoor activities outside of the Greenbelt, Zilker, and that tallish rock on the Colorado River
Pros
-can tell your friends you live in Austin
-can tell your friends that you moved to Austin 'when it used to be cool'
-not Houston or Dallas
-bats?
Source: lived in Austin when it used to be cool

D, it’s a cult.
As someone who has toyed with the idea of relocating to Austin over the past year, I think Austin is akin to Brooklyn ~ 10 years ago. Gentrifying rapidly with niche businesses and events that appeal to a younger crowd.
Compared to more northern cities, the mild winter is also a pro to many.
Summer is pretty bad at first, but you get used to it and atx area has so many pool areas to cool off. Natural springs that are always 60 something degrees - barton springs, hamilton pool, jacobs well, etc. There’s also tons of lakes nearby. I now look forward to summer

Been here for almost 3 years and moving pretty soon. It’s the most boring place I’ve ever been in. Just a giant party town with some music and greenery. Almost no culture, or has been gentrified away, restaurants are abysmal and focused on being “cool” rather than making good food, people seem to be friendly but only at a surface level, real relationships are difficult to cultivate and brutal 6-8 month long summers. In short, mostly hype with a really transitory vibe.
It’s still relatively cheaper although may not be for too long. It’s essentially going to turn into a mini Seattle or SF in the future making it uninhabitable and the people inhospitable.
If you really want to live in Texas, Houston with all its problems is a lot better, personally. Even Dallas.
Edit - the most boring place was Charlotte, Austin’s second lol
😱😱😱😱😱😱 Even Dallas!?
TLDR: I can see why people might think it’s a fine place to live, but why does it seem like everyone thinks it’s SO much better than anywhere else in the US?
Off the top of my head, these are the pros and cons I can think of.
Pros:
- rather central in US
- lots of young people
- lots of bars, decent bbq
- lakes and rivers and some bats
- no state tax
Cons:
- COL through the roof
- crazy hot and humid in the summer
- filled with white frat boy party type of people
- food scene full of fusion spots, not much authentic food and generally not nearly as good as people make it seem
The pros seem rather generic and even if they outweigh the cons, I just don’t get why this is seemingly across the board seen as the next most amazing place to be in the US. Plenty of other cities I can think of that offer similar and none of them are being hyped up to the level Austin is. So even if Austin is nice I don’t see why it’s considered hands down to be THE place to be.
I have lived in Austin for 1.5 years (from East Coast) and I agree with all your points. Only reason I'm still here is because I'm am the frat boy you describe...nah but more seriously I've built up some amazing friends and it's SO HARD to leave and make new friends in other cities esp as you get older.
Yes folks, please stop moving to Austin it’s getting too crowded and more expensive now 😭 -native Texan
I recently moved to Austin after moves from Miami > Seattle > NYC and then TX. I wouldn’t say people think it’s “so much better than other places” that have moved here. Mainly people are moving for job opportunities and better cost of living. Comparing Austin to the places above I have lived, yes, there is not much to do here. The parks, water holes, lakes, and music scene are all we’ve got. However there is potential and the city is expanding and growing. The restaurant scene is nothing like other HCOL cities but it will come eventually and is starting to. I do love my big brand new Texas mansion compared to my one bedroom in Greenpoint though.
You bring up a good point - the music scene. It’s not my thing but I should have added that to the pros list, as I think that’s a unique one that it has going for it.
Ha I live in Austin area it’s okay but I wouldn’t go out of my way to move here. There really isn’t much here. Please don’t move here the traffic stinks and our airport is too small for the population boom.
Also - you need a car. No public transportation. Our water is really bad. It’s hot as hell in the summer. Roaches, snakes, pollen, and no really good Italian food. Not many direct flights for an international airport. There’s a ton of young men here and not a proportionate amount of single women. It’s kind of boring and far from the ocean.
Are you stuck here too?
I feel like it was great 3-5 years ago, but in the next decade it's going to become so overpriced and a nightmare to get around. The transport/road/bike infrastructure there is abysmal.
Following as I hope to move Austin in the next year or so lol
