Why is it always the last-minute shopper who decides to inspect every item on the shelf and chat like it’s happy hour, even after you tell them you’re past closing time? This happened to me last night. I stopped responding and looked at my watch several times, but the guy wouldn't take the hint. He finally left 20 minutes after closing time.

It’s like they think they’re on a leisurely stroll and have all the time in the world instead of a store that’s clearly closed. I’m impressed you didn’t just start turning off the lights. Hopefully he bought something!

Sometimes, it's to commit fraud. Years ago, I had someone try to make a huge purchase (dozens of items, each of which had to be rung up separately, many incorrectly tagged), and pay by credit card. These were in the days of imprinters and having to call the payment processor by telephone for sales over a certain limit. I had two managers running back and forth with the incorrectly tagged items, voiding sales when the customer objected to the correct price, and so on. In the end, the credit card was declined by the payment processor, and the customer left us with dozens of items to restock. Clearly, they were banking on us being so eager to get home that we'd ignore the incorrectly tagged items and put through the sale on the (declined) card. (And yes, the unintentional pun is apt.)

Yeah this happens at my shop too they think that because we’re in a hurry we will be less observant

Ugh, I’ve been there! It’s like they forget you have a life outside of work. You can be polite, but when they don’t take the hint, I like to get firm and remind them. It's not your job to stick around all night while someone chats your ear off.

When I tell you this is the realest thing I have ever read. This is what happens every single time.

Ha….yes….like when a store happens to be open late hours for a big sale day and a customer be looking for a fitting room at 10 minutes till 11….OMG….ya just gotta look at them and wonder….they are seriously looking for a fitting room🥱🥴🥴😳

Once when I was waiting tables, I had a guy pay me cash. The change was 45 cents, which I didn't give back to him because like who wants that. He then asked where the change was, and when I explained that I didn't give back the loose change, he made a big stink about how dollars and cents matter and didn't leave me a tip. He was a republican staffer on capitol hill.
