Revenue control: if you want it, pay for it. Most airlines have control over routes out of each airport so you have no choice. Welcome to the unregulated market where monopolies end up ruining it 👍

Need to pay for the privilege.
If you have high status, they often might.
If not, it’s luck of the draw. They don’t want people assuming they don’t need to pay extra, since they can get bumped up anyways if there are extra seats. They would rather every one of those seats go empty if it means even one person decides to fork up the money on the next flight.
That makes sense. Thank you!

Have to have fencing policies in place sometimes so people don’t try to game the system by buying lower fares and hoping for / expecting upgrades. Need to capture that willingness to pay.
The title. Why are some gate agents such rule sticklers and say unless you pay for a seat upgrade, it’s not happening. 9/10 out of 10, they’ll upgrade you at no extra charge. But that 1/10 really is annoying.
This isn’t basic economy to first class. This is main cabin to an exit row or main cabin preferred when there are multiple seat openings minutes from boarding.
Always just ask the flight attendant and say it politely “if it’s okay with the passenger in the exit aisle and the flight captain (yes pilots are called flight captains by those in aviation), could I sit next to them?”
I know what you mean. I often feel that most things/situations are good or bad based on who you get. Agent, waiter, cable company, car sales, etc etc etc. Most can be great but that 1/10 is the freaking worsttttt lol.
I love that everyone is saying buy the seat when they 100% would be annoyed in the same situation. Unfortunately it just is what it is.
If fishbowl had awards like Reddit, you’d be getting gold.
Dude, have you ever seen how much they have to type? Moving your seat looks like 10 page college essay to me.

Small chance it’s a balance issue.

This sounds like Delta given the name used for your cabin classes… what’s your medallion status?
I’ve never had trouble with this at Platinum or higher, but I’d imagine if you’re no-status the gate agent may have limited options (or desire)
If a seat is open I just take it, they never ask to see your ticket
