I feel that 6 months is a good amount for a single person without any dependents. If you're married and both work with no kids, could maybe reduce that to 4 months. With kids and a non-working spouse, I would always want at least 9 months to a year just to be safe.
I'm at 3 months right now. Just got engaged so drained my savings. I have heard anywhere from 6 to 12 months
Trust me... you never really relax. When you get to 6 months of savings, then you think you’ll need 12, when you get 12, you’ll think you need 18... when you get to 18, then you start thinking ok, how much so I can do my own thing and not have to worry about working for “the man."
Thanks for the insight. I’m single with no dependents. Aiming for 6 months maybe even a little more to be on the safe side
It does give you a great peace of mind to be able to say: "Even if I lost my job today, I will be completely fine". May even change your outlook on the job and allow you to relax a bit more,
According to my financial advisor - 9 months (based on the average time it takes to get a job if you lost your current job today)
Six months at least.
