Quality and speed of resolution decreases significantly after 50 cases (in litigation).
When I did plaintiff’s PI, I had 140-150 cases with a case manager. Needless to say, I eventually burned out
It's cute that you think the number of cases accurately reflects your workload. In reality, maybe 30 to 50 plus cases actually assigned and then you'll be asked to cover for other attorneys on issues that come up such as court appearances and depositions and motions.
Case load isn’t everything but it absolutely matters and reflects a large portion of your workload and ability to attend to higher value cases. Especially if you’re more junior or less experienced. This platform is for information, not to be spoken down to for asking a genuine question 🙄
Third year. Average about 50 cases at any given time that I work on with a couple of partners. Range from soft tissue MVA to 7 (and occasionally 8) figure cases. It’s a comfortable amount.
50 cases in litigation. 300 in prelit but with 3 case managers and 3 admin assistants.
Rising Star
Depends on the type of PI firm. If it's a big advertising firm then the case load will be extremely different than a smaller shop.
Med-Mal boutique, 6 attorneys - 7th year associate, my docket is about 12 retained med-mal cases (about 8 in litigation), maybe 8 or so MVA/general PI (a couple of which are 7+ figures), and maybe 3 in “post-litigation” pending probate court approval of settlements/distributions. The associates also handle screening most of the potential cases.
I share an assistant with one of the partners, and we have a medical records person who handles the requests for all 6 attorneys, and currently two law clerks. I do most of my own drafting, discovery, motion work, lien resolution, probate. It feels like a lot, but seeing how much more others have on their plate is pretty surprising/stress inducing!
Truly depends on the complexity of the cases, whether or not they’re in litigation, and your support staff. Every PI firm is different in this regard
Depends on size of firm. 80-120 cases if mid-sized. (Not saying it should be this way)
I have 200-225 cases, 40 of these in lot with another attorney but I assist as needed, but we have 12 case manager/paralegals that have 40-50 cases each amongst 5 total prelit attorneys, I don’t do litigation cases I only assist in motion drafting and arbitration or mediation statements
Completely depends on the kinds of cases. If they are all complex and 7 figure and up, the number should be lower.
I've got 120 cases. Most of them are fairly simple.
I have recently gotten one major case with complex issues. That one case is more work than about 20-30 of the other ones.
Numbers don't tell the whole story.
118 complex cases which was insane, especially my modest level of experience. Several of my cases had over 20 defendants and all 118 cases had a corporate fraud component. I left and they split my case load in half between two very senior attorneys.
