Y'all seeing that story on Fishbowl about Paul Bryant and Covington?

It did not happen. Did you see his subsequent posts? He’s crashing out very publicly and if you need evidence of that, please go read all his follow-up posts. He has no credibility, and the evidence that he’s unwell is clear for the world to see.

I’d rather not provide additional details, but he’s threatened multiple attorneys, and his behavior is alarming. And the attorney he’s accused is so measured that it strains all credulity to imagine him resorting to such an epithet.

Without having any factual insight, this situation seems layered and complex. First, even if we assume there’s some merit to the allegations, this young man is clearly in the throes of a very public mental health crisis. His statement that no one in his family will speak to him is very telling, suggesting that whatever’s happening with him isn’t confined to his professional life.

Second, notwithstanding the ostensible hyperbolic nature of the accusations, it’s not completely unthinkable that partners at a firm could be overtly racist and that the firm could be complicit and aware (e.g., Lewis Brisbois anyone?)

Third, if there’s some validity to the accusations, that itself could have been the breaking point. POC work under a lot of pressure and experience workplace trauma in ways that White people cannot experientially or contextually understand or truly appreciate.

Last, this could all be completely baseless and the figment of his imagination. Again, very plausible. If that’s the case, then several innocent people have had their names and professional reputations sullied and tarnished in a viral manner. That would be beyond unfortunate. Moreover, it could make law firms (with only 3% black attorneys to begin with), even less inclined to hire minorities for fear of this sort of thing.

Like I said… complex and layers.

Bear in mind it wasn't long ago that we saw the Lewis Brisbois scandal. Bigots are everywhere. This guy is just putting them on blast. Let your lawyers do the work, sure. But how often are people truly held to public account for their disgusting behaviors?

The idea of a Covington partner using the hard R just seems unbelievable.

Thank you!! Wow.

This is not a one off. Happens in a lot of firms. They have HR who are trained to push out people. The pyramid model has been broken for a decade or more. It’s possible this was a well laid out trap. I may not agree with a position of law, but I have to work on it.

I got in the bad books of a big Texas firm because I refused to write an article on something I believe is a Ponzi scheme. I was clear that I will support the client on legal representation on these issues with their briefs and continued to do so. Putting my name on a position I don’t believe in as my thoughts on the firm publications is where I drew the line.

It’s difficult to take a position that’s against your identity. But I am just an attorney who works for the client interests. My interests are subservient to the client interests when representing the clients.

With even that nuanced of an approach, I still had setbacks in my career. This kind of friction is more common than you think. We all deal with it differently.

Him posting saying he refuses to pursue legal action and hopes the current administration will step in is very telling in my opinion. He also said the slur was said in response to him telling someone he’s a better attorney than them. People sue even when they don’t have a valid claim. I’m not saying he’s lying or that he didn’t have a bad experience there, but there is definitely more to the story.

I am so tired of being treated like an assistant and I’m at a loss on how to correct it. Appreciate any advice.
