I am so tired of being treated like an assistant and I’m at a loss on how to correct it. My coworkers are generally nice, but while I watch white (usually male) associates at my level or even more junior get substantive work, I’m still receiving administrative tasks as a mid-level. Appreciate any advice.

Sorry you’re experiencing this. Some of the women of color I’m friends with at my firm experience this often and I tell them what works for me—I have learned to be VERY assertive. I will ask for assignments when my workload is light, I make it clear I want to work extra hours beyond billing requirements, and I always ask to join things I’m not invited to (like oral arguments—worst they could say is no but that’s never happened bc I’m always on top of my shit). I don’t complain now about admin tasks bc I am only a second year attorney.

It sucks but we have to work harder, be better, and always ask for the work we want.

like

This. You (unfortunately) need to start asking for more. When you're tasked with admin tasks for a deal, let the senior know you can also do XYZ (even if you feel you don't have the full experience-- you'll pick it up). It gets exhausting, but pays dividends in the long-term. Also, try to work with more partners than the ones you're currently working with-- hopefully others will appreciate the value and skills.

I also think it’s important to make allies out of these white men—I usually ask them if they need help with something they are working on. Just be careful, make sure you find a way to let the partner know you are helping them so you get credit where it’s due. Some people are real snakes

Questions: objectively, do you do good work, take ownership, show initiative? If someone doesn’t show me these things after I lead them there, then I often give up on them.
If you are doing these things, then I agree you need to assert yourself more unfortunately. Do you have a partner mentor to help guide you?

Thank you all. SA1 - my feedback has always been positive and I am consistently told that I operate above my class year, especially when I have the opportunity to run deals. I make it a point to ask for substantive work and request to take initial reviews of documents. However, more often than not, when I am told that my year is needed on staffing, I end up getting handed checklist items, due diligence tracking and signature pages, which is at a first year level. On the same deal that prompted this question, I learned that the more junior associate is drafting documents while I’m dealing with the data site due diligence and running redlines.

This is racist. It’s time to move on before it starts to take a toll on your mental health. Take it from someone who’s been there and made the mistake of trying to stick it out.

Ignore my title, I'm an analyst.

I've been working here for over a year and my associate basically never does a thing. I get I'm the analyst but I'm the only one on my team. I pull together every page.

My associate does minimal reviewing, if even, usually it goes straight to my vp. And even my vp has pulled pages together.

Is it valid to ask my vp to chat about this? I'm not even expecting a 50/50 but pulling even 1% of the pages would make me not want to shoot myself

Compliance question here, I have always thought of the SALT deduction on the fed return as a perm item & have treated as such in such sch M-3. I see that some people put it as a temp on sch M-3. What is the justification for treating it as a temp on the M-3. You don’t set up a deferred on the def RF for the state tax deduct & it is also a rate impacting item (I know that some temps can be rate impacting). But this all leaves me to side with perm. Does anyone know the logic behind temp treatment?

Someone on LinkedIn expressed disappointment about the lack of diversity from the big law firms in TX that were posting pics of their summer associates. A managing partner commented that he thought the post might be about a pic he posted (12/14 SAs were white). He tried to defend this by saying that they had LGBT and socioeconomic diversity.
