30k salary cut for an interesting role and in a city you really want to be in? Currently in MCOL city making 120k and have an offer for 90k in HCOL city.

I’m miserable in my current job and think I’m being pigeonholed. New role is exciting and seems to have a good long term potential. I know it’s a huge financial risk but I’m not married and have no kids, so I feel like now is the only time to take risk!

I took a paying cut moving from MCOL to HCOL to be in a city I knew had better earning potential and needed something to get my foot in the door. Moved and 3 years later have had zero regrets. I’ve changed jobs since then and my income has gone up significantly.

uplifting

It’s scary it was a $20k pay cut was at the job for a year and a half and when I switched I did with a 30% pay bump. Also no kids and felt the same way that it was the perfect time to make a change and see what being in a bigger city was like.

90k is quite low in NYC but you can live in NJ and going to NYC every day for work is very common. If I were you, I would step out of my comfort zone and see how far I can go. Sometimes you never know what you are capable of if you don’t do it.

One, did you already try to negotiate the salary higher? And two, as long as this move is for you and your growth then I say go for it as long as it won’t leave you stressed in the new city at the lower rate. You spend about 1/3 of your time each week working, why shouldn’t you spend it doing something that is making you more happy? Progress is definitely not a straight line.

I’m going to try to negotiate to $100k but I’m thinking of the worst case scenario. And yeah I want to be happy at work!

90K in a HCOL might be tight depending on the city. Make sure you’re comparing your tax rates (state and city etc)

GT1 that is incorrect.

You will owe NYS tax but not NYC if you are not a resident of the city

I am a clinical research coordinator working in Austin, Texas. I have my Masters in Cell & Molecular Biology and have a year of laboratory research experience.

I’ve been in my position for 5 months now. I make $27 hourly which amounts to about $51,000 yearly. Am I being under paid? Are all coordinator positions hourly? As a laboratory researcher I was salary :(

How do I go about asking for a raise or should I explore other companies or medical schools that have clinical research?
