Keeping cost structure low and planning to retire early. Concur that current pace isn’t sustainable much past 50.
42 and 4th year partner here. Fully agree this is not sustainable for me long term. I primarily work in M&A which has its own challenges due to market conditions, regulation and tech disruption. I’m stacking cash and investing more than I ever have. I’m focused on my fire number (I have 3 tiers with different lifestyle considerations), fully funding college funds for 2 kids, and saving cash to buy a local business / or start one. Consulting will always be around IMO but it won’t be familiar to me 5/10 years from now so I’ve decided to sacrifice in the short term until I’m financially comfortable.
Professional services has constantly faced disruptions. In the past as well. If you think about it, the reason we are in this profession is because we are supposed to manage disruptions and evolution for our client. Not be afraid of it ourselves.
Every few years, we evolve and look different at the end of it. We are currently experiencing evolution, maybe a much faster pace.
Deloitte agree with you. You’re part of a firm with strong implementation and heritage in tech. Firms without that will shrink or die
If I was in my late 30’s or early 40’s, then I’d definitely be looking to get out of this industry. The golden days are definitely over.
I would say buy or start a business. The future at Corporate America really does look bleak - constant cost cutting and job insecurity.
Turned 40 this year (Y3P) and came to the same realization; both the steady state BAU of a Partner role + consulting industry disruption.
My solution? Always be building.
I jumped to industry two months ago to build a consulting capability off the back of their tech and IP.
Hoping to get at least 15 more years mileage - before my skills become completely obsolete.

In my early 40s and have felt the same way. In the middle of transitioning to a new firm with a new mission to give me new purpose. Couldn’t imagine staying where I was for another 15+.
If you stay relevant and keep up with the new trends and learn new things on almost daily basis, you can stay relevant. I am in my late 50s and that’s how I see it.
MD4: Exactly!
40, 2nd year Partner. If I could do it again I'd have maybe bet more on myself being able to grow something when I was 35ish.
To me our business model is no longer setup to handle this change nor are the senior partners. It's very reminiscent of the boomers cashing out housing etc.
I'm planning a swap to another B4 in 40 days, short term boost, they're betting on what I do and my geography (my area isnt a priority in my current firm). But even as excited as I am, I suspect this is a 4-6 year boost while I figure out what I truly want to do.
Who I truly feel for are the juniors in our business. I dont think they're going to get what they used to in consulting.
46 and 3rd yr MD. Have lost all interest in work; doesnt excite me anymore. Feel the same ol same ol boring job. Have been more prudent on my financials - investing, trading so that I can call it quits in a yr or two
