Don't take this the wrong way, but don't ask "what should I do in New York?" without any context or preferences. It's New York, not a one-horse town.
Go to a show, go to a baseball game, find a concert, sit in the park have brunch, go to brunch with drag queens, sing karaoke until 3am and eat ramen. Or be one of those people who goes to the M&M store in Times Square if that's your idea of fun.
Try the halal food cart also outside Hilton
Totally depends on what you like. The city has everything to offer, and always has something for everyone
Museums (met, moma, Guggenheim), walk Central Park, see a show or two. August will be hot.
you don’t have to see the entire met, just see what you want
Book bus and boat tours, you’ll see all the major attractions. It will be hot, you can lay out in Central Park on a blanket. You can do a day or overnight trip to the Hamptons / Montauk or vineyards.

Walking through Central Park. Boat tour to see Statue of Liberty. Museum of the City of New York - it had the awesome You Are Here film retrospective but it looks like it may have ended. After being in NYC take a side trip to Hedo in Jamaica to relax a few days before coming back to work
Go to the 9/11 museum and memorial. It’s part of the story of where we are today and offers a window back to another time. I also enjoyed dinner at the Central Park boathouse
Check out the Tenement Museum-guided /acted tour of life on the lower East Side. It’s NYC history and very engaging.
Oh! And check out the TKTS booth on W62nd St for same-day /next day 1/2 price tkts to a show…!
Check out a couple of music venues for live music. I love the blues/jazz scene in NYC, but there is all kinds of music. Hop on hop off bus will give you a macro level view of the city. I also enjoy the village, little Italy and Chinatown. These are all areas for walking around, window shopping, and getting a “feel” for the neighborhoods. Recommend checking out the food in one of those areas if you enjoy Italian or Chinese.
