Suiran is a bit out of the city. You want to stay in the pontocho area. Ritz is in a better more central location. My family is from Kyoto and I go there every year!
Not a Marriott property but there are these Machiya hotels where they take old houses and convert them into almost villa style hotels. Very cool especially in Kyoto.
Stayed at that Ritz last year and it was phenomenal. Also got upgraded due to status so the room was extra nice. Good location, great service. The Michelin starred tempura restaurant there was one of our highlights, definitely a must go
OP- I just noticed that there’s a new Luxury Collection hotel opening in November, The Mitsubishi Kyoto, worth looking into.
Yeah just saw as well. The rooms look amazing but going to wait for some reviews first before splurging the points!
Ritz is more convenient location wise. I stayed in that area last year and it was perfect. Largely just walked around everywhere
For what it’s worth, I stayed at the St. Regis in Osaka and took the Shinkansen to Kyoto - it’s only a 15-min trip. I am Titanium as well and when I was there a couple of years ago they treated me incredibly well.
Been doing this exact same research for a while. I was down to those two as well and landed on the Ritz. There’s some videos I. YouTube directly comparing the two. Seems a bit like personal preference as the vibe is different. I’ll be there next month so hopefully the right decision.
I agree D1 generally as well. There is not a St. Regis in Kyoto unfortunately. The suiran is luxury collection though. Given Japan being Japan, I wouldn’t count on getting extra perks anywhere. However, you will get great service at any of these places with any status.
Aman kyoto is the best of course!
