Honestly, D is notorious for doing this. There are tons of posts on here of this happening to people. A friend from KPMG was offered a lateral position at D, with no salary bump, when he raised this to the recruiter, he was told it’s because “D is providing him with a better brand” aka it’s a privilege to work for them. I personally wouldn’t want to work for such a company, why don’t you try another Big 4 instead? Hopefully a firm that brings you in at the level you want and deserve.
Yeah.. I’ve heard of some pretty shitty tactics. All I can say is, it’s not across the board.. some people are just crap.
We don’t do this.
The bands at D can be huge. Granted I was C level over there but Cs could make as little as 80k and as much as 140k. The titles there are very broad. With that having come from D to ACN the difference is pretty small. D has a bit more “polish” especially in its on site consultants. But the quality and type of work done is roughly the same at least from my experience. The name brand is so so. The other thing is that joining at the SM level is really hard. It gets more and more network dependent the higher you go at the firm. Really M is the highest level worth joining at for a first timer imo
I agree
This is typical deloitte bs they always pull. Bring you in at a level lower. I've seen this done many times over
This happened to me 3 years ago and I did a hard pass. Got hired at BAH 3 months later at exactly where I should be based on my technical YOE. Deloitte plays it up as “needing to learn the ropes” their way but I saw it as lowballing bs.
Starting in the recent couple years, D has significantly increased difficulty in letting people coming in as SM. We had so many external hire SMs who didn’t work out, not because skills, but network (both up and down). I was under the impression though that they made M salary band high enough to accommodate those candidates though
Yes who wants sales and MR goals the first year with a whole new network. Have to be a very specific hire - industry specialist bringing a pipeline - to come in comfortable that will hit the performance metrics the first year.
Our levels in Consulting are ‘harder’ even within other practices at D. For example, an SM in Advisory would be M in Consulting, same with Tax/Audit. Unfortunately people are stuck on titles, titles at D are not necessarily ‘equal’ to other firms. They could have brought you in at a high M level, with potentially better pay than what you had.
I’m not saying they aren’t misaligned. I’m stating that they don’t typically have more years of experience with a title
I can also say that the 12 month promotion mentioned here is an outlier. I have personally known many candidates down leveled with a promise of accelerated promotion which never materializes for the very reasons mentioned above - lack of network and support. If you don’t feel it’s the right level, don’t talk yourself into taking it. Could be a difficult couple of years.
I don’t believe I am misinformed, but I’m willing to listen. I fully understand the increased priority that is placed on driving sales and revenue as one moved towards PPMD.
What am I missing? This is a genuine request and not meant in any backhanded way.
I apologize if what I posted may have been misconstrued. My point about not receiving credit for sales or revenue was meant to imply my skills and extensive experience are what sells the work. Very little value is provided by the personnel above. Further, I am very involved in multiple fronts in putting proposals together that are used for current and proposed clients. The scopes are things I know the leadership are unwilling or unable to understand or execute. So I’m leading, selling and executing but receiving little to nothing for it...that glory (comp and bonus) doesn’t trickle down.
I’d say levelling. I don’t see why you couldn’t reapply but don’t go expecting SM..
All good points and appreciate the feedback.
Why are you even moving from acc to d 🤦♂️
@EY1 - It was a pretty awkward conversation so not 100% sure I would to be honest. I’d definitely consider another Big 4 but for whatever reason the D recruiters (external) are the ones who keep reaching out and quite honestly thought I’d be a good fit. I’ve been plenty of clients that have D around so know I’m capable.
Yep not at all saying that you’re not capable, all Big 4 are the same for the most part. At the end what matters for most is, salary, culture fit, and the type of work you’re doing.
I guess I can offer my own personal experience, I came in as a lateral pegged also at SM. And was talked down. Lol. But the reason made sense to me and I knew that it was a possibility. I made SM in 12 months but and got the very top end of the salary band on the promo (I was paid a fair bit more in industry). So it sort of worked out.
I’m going to leave soon anyway 🤷♂️
Fair enough. This gave you some runway to get up to speed and immersed in your culture. When this happened to me, I was told that I was basically already halfway to the next level (so 12 months away like you, though I’m sure you worked hard to get that fast promo) but when I started they made it seem like I was going to have to go through the full tenure cycle (i.s. two or two and half years to get there). Switched firms.
The same thing happened to me. I accepted the role and I’m glad I did. SM as a new experienced hire with no network and no indeed of how D works would have been way too much. M was appropriate.
Yup. I'm 34 years old and was hired as a C because I didn't have consulting experience, only industry experience.
I wish I would have stood my ground because I didn't know a 30 something C was considered bad.
Only been here 1.5 years and I'm trying to leave. Deloitte is best for right out of college, not experienced hires.
This happened to me at D. Interviewed for M, brought in as SC. But pay was compared to M I think.
