Not a homeowner - but looking to buy in 2-3 years. I feel like I'm saving well, but could save more pre-tax with my 401k. Can I reasonably access 401k funds to buy a house, or should I keep just putting 10% to 401k and investing post tax money to save up a down payment?

My gf and I are early twenties. She lives in the city with a friend. I live at home. Most of her income goes towards rent and eating out/doing stuff in the city, and I save/invest aggressively, so we have quite a gap in net worth. I try to tell her to cut back on spending but she says it’s what makes her happy. Any one had a similar experience/ have advice?

What is your age and how much money have you saved in your 401k/403b for retirement?

No judgements please :( need advice! I am nearing 30, and have over 100k. I have no idea how to invest! I am maxing my 401K, have a few high profile stocks, and some money in crypto - but on holding pattern on all! How do I invest the rest of my money wisely?

Just gotta tell someone and it’s totally gauche to tell anyone I know. My husband and I just hit a million dollars net worth—well, it was probably a few days ago but we just updated the spreadsheet with his 401k balance. AHHHHHH! I had planned to celebrate the occasion with a fancy restaurant dinner but we’re not going out during the pandemic. I’ll have to dig some steaks out of the freezer!

I’m a 28F who is barely getting into investing. It’s frustrating that it took this long but as a first gen college grad, my parents didn’t know anything about this stuff until very recently, so naturally I was never taught about it. It’s crazy to see people younger than me with all this knowledge on saving and investing. How did you learn so much at such a young age? Any advice for someone like me who is starting out so late in the game?

I just started a new job and it doesn’t look like the 401k plan at the new place allows for rollovers (or at least I’m not aware of it). Should I leave my roth 401k at the old plan or roll it into a Roth IRA instead? I don’t really have much experience with this kind of stuff.

Hello! I’m working at a very niche, boutique consulting firm. I’m happy, but was always open to exploring my horizons, especially because the compensation was fairly low. With COVID-19, workflow has been non stop, but significant shortages in cashflow (despite growing clients) has resulted in no foreseeable raise, and opting between 401k and bonuses. I’m more proactively jobhunting now, but have only one interview at a larger firm and 0 boutiques. Any recs on who is hiring? I’m desperate.

I am staying in the US only for few years so that I didnt join any 401k or pension plan. However I see this statement on my employee details: "You are not vested in your pension benefit as of 12/31/2019. Assuming continuous service, you may vest in your pension benefit on 01/27/2021, your earliest vesting date." what does it mean exactly? I also see there is 5k credited. I'd appreciate if someone can explain. thanks

I’m in my mid 20s and starting to save for a condo/house in the next 3-4 years and live in the DMV. I currently have ~$30k in my “house fund” and contribute $3.5k a month after 401k and Roth IRA contributions. As a first time homeowner is it a good idea to put down a smaller down payment with an FHA to maybe reach my goal of being a homeowner sooner? Or should I wait to be able to put down 20%?

Question on 401l true up I max out my 401k first three months (immediate vesting) of year and my company does a true up later. However, I'm hoping to leave my job this summer. Will the true up money be lost of will it be contributed when I leave?

I recently learned that the Roth IRA has only been around since 1997. Which means it’s likely no one in this bowl has seen someone retire with significant Roth savings yet. But has anyone opened this type of account for their kids who work part time jobs? Really curious how others are using this for long term financial planning.

If your company doesn't match any amount for 401k for the first year, should you just put your money else where for that first and max those out first (HSA/Roth IRA) before opting to contribute to the 401k?
